Nathan Ross, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Kline Galland Home in Seattle, surrounded by his loving family following a long illness. Nate was born in Seattle on April 10, 1924, son of parents Morris and Tillie Ross, Eastern European immigrants. He attended Horace Mann Elementary School and graduate from Garfield High School and the University of Washington. He served in the US Navy as a lieutenant (JG) and in the South and Central Pacific from 1943 to 1946. When he returned to Seattle, he worked with his father in the General Bag Company, and in 1960 joined the Insurance business in which he worked for 45 years.
He met and married his beloved wife, Judith, and they had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. They had lived on Mercer island for 50 years, most recently residing at the Belletini in Bellevue.
Nate, always dashing in the latest fashions, loved to discuss current events and was such a superb dancer his presence grade the dance floor of many events over the years.
But he is best known as a tireless supporter, contributor and advocate for the Jewish community and for the area's may Jewish social service agencies. He will long be remembered as an icon, mentor and lifelong athlete at the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island. Having played basketball there until he was 82 years old, and serving as a board member, he was honored by the J in 2012 with the Samuel and Althea Stroum Spirit of Inspiration Award at the Circle of Friends lunch as a supporter of the J. He was widely known there as "the All-Star."
Nate is preceded in death by his parents, Tillie and Morris Ross, and his sister, Elizabeth Vallone. He is survived by his wife, Judith, his sister Marilyn (Bill) Sugar of San Francisco, son Neil (Liz) of Bellevue, daughter Bobbi Chamberlin (Don Shifrin) and his adored grandchildren Alexis Chamberlin, Mercer Island, and Max Shifrin of Los Angeles.
His family would like to recognize and thank caregivers Mahal, Beverly, Katarina, and Buna for their tremendous support over the last two years, and the staff at the Kline Galland Home for their care of Nate.
Services will be held Tuesday 11am at the Arthur Wright Funeral Home, 520 W. Raye, Seattle. A gathering honoring Nate's life will be held immediately following the funeral at Temple de Hirsch, 1441 16th Avenue, Seattle. 98122
The family request any remembrances in Nate's honor be made to the Stroum Jewish Community Center, the Kline Galland Home, Jewish Family Services or a charity of your choice.
