In 1942, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps after completing his second year at Virginia Military Institute. He served in England with the 8th Air Force as a co-pilot on B-17's and his crew completed 35 combat missions. Upon separation from the service he attended Virginia Tech before he returned to active duty with the USAF in 1947. He married Sarah Burem Armstrong of Stony Point, TN, on February 25, 1950. He received his B.S. in Meteorology from FSU in 1960.
After 23 years of active duty, Mr. Young retired from the U.S. Air Force and taught Physics and Math at Northern Virginia Community College. He also became interested local politics, and from 1966 to1974, he served three terms on the Fairfax City Council, and then served as Mayor from 1974 to 1978. Upon leaving public service, Mr. Young retired to Pensacola, FL and subsequently moved to Gulf Shores, Alabama. He remained active in politics with the Republican Committee, first in Escambia County, FL and then in Baldwin County, AL. His other activities were varied but his love and support of VMI remained principal among them. Although a lifelong Anglican, he was an active member of St. Andrew's by the Sea Community Church in Gulf Shores. For the last year, he has lived with his daughters in Tallahassee.
