Newton Ferguson Bliss, 87, of Norwich, passed away Thursday morning, May 31, 2012, at his home. Newton was born on the family farm in Bainbridge, NY the son of Howard Thomas and Jenny May Ferguson Bliss. He was a 1942 graduate of the Bainbridge High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during WWI and following his service to his country he returned to the family farm which he operated for another 24 years. Newton sold the family farm in 1968 and moved to Norwich at which time he became employed by Proctor & Gamble until his retirement in 1985. Newton Ferguson Bliss, 87, of Norwich, passed away Thursday morning, May 31, 2012, at his home.
Newton was born on the family farm in Bainbridge, NY the son of Howard Thomas and Jenny May Ferguson Bliss. He was a 1942 graduate of the Bainbridge High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during WWI and following his service to his country he returned to the family farm which he operated for another 24 years. Newton sold the family farm in 1968 and moved to Norwich at which time he became employed by Proctor & Gamble until his retirement in 1985.
Newton served as Master of the Grange, a fraternal organization for farmers in Bainbridge. He was a master carpenter and stone mason and built his home where he and his wife have lived for the past 44 years. His many hobbies included bottle/mason jar collecting, woodworking (including specialty whirly-gigs), ham radio operator (WA2SWR), photography, gardening and traveling. He had subscribed to the National Geographic magazine since it began publication and owned a copy of ever issue.
Newton is survived by his wife Myrtle, his daughters; Faye (Ron) Niles of Unadilla, Sally (Frank) Van Wie of New Milford, NJ, his grandchildren Heather Niles Barber, Brian Niles, Christine Van Wie Santee and five great grandchildren, Derek, Taylor, Nikolas, Owen and Sabrina.
Private funeral services for Newton will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
