During my first semester at UMBC, I met Nick. We had a lot of classes together for the first two semesters of college. Nick was one of the most down to earth people I have ever met in my life. He knew I was a commuter, so when it started raining unexpectedly, he would text me asking if I brought an umbrella because if not he could pick me up from wherever I was. (Our class was in PAHB, the furthest building on campus, and if I were to walk from the library to PAHB in the rain I would have been drenched.) I remember seeing him in this UMBC scarf that everyone was wearing around, and I asked him where he got it from because I was the only person without one. On my birthday, Nick went out of his way to get me one of those scarves. I honestly don't think I would have gotten through our ENGL100 class if it weren't for Nick. He always knew how to make me laugh during our boring lectures. I'll never forget the times I had with Nick.
I am so sorry for your loss. I am at a loss of words to express how devastated I am. Nick will always hold a special spot in my heart because he was one of my first friends at UMBC. Thank you for bringing such a wonderful and caring person into this world. I will keep your family in my prayers.

I met Nick (and as he liked me to call him then, Donnie) during my first semester at UMBC. From the first time I met him, I wanted to be his friend. I remember we talked on a bench for quite some time and had dinner together with some friends at the D-hall. He was so kind and friendly and I'll never forget the friendship we had. He helped me through my toughest moments as I helped him through his.

I am so sorry to your entire family for your loss. I cannot even imagine or compare to the pain you feel. He will always be in my heart and in the heart of the many friends he made and even though you don't know me, I will keep you all in my prayers for the years to come. Thank you for bringing your wonderful son into the world and thank you for letting me get to know him.

My dearest Dennis and Robin, my heart hurts and my eyes cry with you for this unthinkable loss of Nicholas. A child's death is unnatural and unjust. I have read "Death ends the child's life but it does not sever the bond between the parent and the child." You are wonderful parents who gave him love, lead by example and set standards for a future course to success. While his life on earth has passed, may our grieving and memories of him keep him ever present in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Bartko family,
So sorry to hear of Nick's passing. I never meet Nick, but through Marybeth it is like I knew him most of his life. Know that he is still all around you. Speak to him and he will let you know he is there in ways that will amaze you. He has only left you in body but not in spirit, that doesn't make it better but sometimes it's the only thing that makes it bearable. May you find peace in his signs and comfort in God's word.

I am saddened to hear this, but we will see each other again. The life of clouds is a parting and a meeting. A tear and a smile.
And so does the spirit become separated from The greater spirit to move in the world of matter, And pass as a cloud over the mountain of sorrow, And the plains of joy to meet the breeze of death, And return whence it came. Peace

So saddened to hear, but we will meet again.

A tear and a smile.

And so does the spirit become separated from

And pass as a cloud over the mountain of sorrow
And the plains of joy to meet the breeze of death
And return whence it came.

Although I did not know your son I live here at the pond and we have all been stunned and deeply saddened at this tragedy. I lost my only brother in a a similarly unexpected accident when he was 24. The how's and whys are never really clear but I am hoping there is comfort in knowing that so many of us experience the loss of family and truly understand and share in your sorrow.
