With great sorrow our family shares the loss of Nicholas Maro Block II. Born in Savannah, Georgia and proudly named in honor of his late grandfather, Nicholas Maro Block who was "the greatest influence in my life as a young man." He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Maro Block and Elizabeth Fulton Block.
Mr. Block attended Lanier High School and Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia. He was honored to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy. His beloved grandfather and family were the owners of The Dempsey Hotel from 1913-1977. Later in life Mr. Block would become the owner and president of The Dempsey Hotel from 1964 – 1977. He was President of the Block Corporation and invested in, and developed real estate in Macon and the surrounding area. He was extremely successful as a private financial investor. Mr. Block had the honor of serving as the President and board member of the Georgia Hotel Association and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club, the Elks Lodge and Idle Hour Country Club.
As family and friends share and cherish memories of Nick Block we love and celebrate; a man with a beautiful smile and great sense of humor; a man who was an awesome story teller with a remarkable memory of history and his lifetime memories of Macon, friends and family; a man who loved animals and a man who truly loved his family in which he often stated 'he loved his daughters more than life itself.'
Mr. Block is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Patricia Hawkins Block and loving daughters, Elizabeth Block Odom (Richard) and Katherine Block Bennett (Grant) and four grandchildren Nicholas Bennett, Whitney Woodard, Garrett Bennett and Ansley Woodard.
The entire family would like to sincerely thank the families and friends who have encouraged the family and supported them during his illness. Each of you is special and your kind words and encouragement are greatly appreciated.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or the pet adoption center of your choice.
Visitation will be from 2:30 until 4:30 pm Sunday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. The family has requested private services with Rev. Ron Holland officiating.
