Shortly after, they moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil for Nikolaus to work as an engineer at an electrical motor manufacturing company, and also where sons Michael and Alex were born. The family moved to Buffalo, New York in 1957 where Nikolaus worked at Westinghouse Electric for the next 30 years, and where daughter Vera was born. Westinghouse transferred him to Texas in 1976.

Nikolaus was a gifted and skilled electrical engineer who worked on designing high horsepower electric industrial motors. In 1977, he was recognized by Westinghouse with their most distinguished award, The Order of Merit, for his valuable and lasting contributions in developing solutions to the complex problems of electrical rotating machines.

Nikolaus retired in 1987 to spend time with family and to enjoy gardening, cooking and reading. More recently, Nikolaus was a faithful member and supporter of St John the Forerunner Orthodox Church in Cedar Park, Texas. He was a tonsured Reader in the Orthodox Church and was blessed by service to the church in his last few years.
