Mrs. Theron Timothy Abston, 92, died peacefully at her residence in Ridgeland July 9, 2013 surrounded by friends and loved ones. Visitation will be held at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland, 12-2pm Friday, July 12. A graveside service will be held immediately following at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.

Nina Spencer Abston was born in Columbus, Miss. on December 7, 1920. She lived and worked there until she married Second Lieutenant Theron Timothy "T" Abston, on July 12, 1942. Following World War II, Nina and T were stationed across the United States and in Okinawa. They returned to the US and welcomed their two children, Lynn and Phillip. The family was stationed in Louisiana, Ohio, and Illinois before moving abroad to England, where T served as Base Commander of Sealand Air Base. The family returned to the US and resided in Alabama and Texas, before moving to Madison, where T and Nina spent many years entertaining their beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Nina was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved cooking, crossword puzzles, and bargaining for good deals at junk shops. Some of her favorite activities included teaching cooking skills and preparing snacks for her children, and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Any visitor to the Abston home likely experienced a lively conversation with Nina about favorite recipes, cooking shows, and food, often while seated at the kitchen table or standing at the stove. Nina had an infamously feisty personality. She hated cats and gardenias. Her mischievous sense of humor be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Nina is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Theron Timothy Abston, parents Margaret and Ed Spencer, and siblings Ruth Spencer and Jake Spencer. She is survived by her children Lynn Abston Vann (Thad) and Dr. Phillip Allen Abston (Joan Maybury). She also leaves her grandchildren, Margaret Lynn Vann, Michael Murray Vann (Brandi), Allen Maxwell Vann, Erin Abston Kice (Sean), Dr. Sarah Abston Sterling (Timothy), Dr. Timothy Alexander Abston (Elizabeth Jones), Robin Riddell Jones (Lee), and Charles Ross Riddell and great-children Sela Suzanne Sterling and Coen Duke Kice. She is also survived by dear family friends, Robert Riddell and Dr. Susan Buttross Riddell. The family thanks Doris Myers for the years of care and support she provided to Mrs. Abston.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, Miss. 39703.
