Nina, Benware Margraves, 102, of Houston, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, the 4th day of June 2014. Known as Nina to her friends and as Nina B to her seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Nina was born on the 19th day of December 1911 in Houston, Texas to Edgar and Marcella Benware.

Nina was raised in Port Arthur, Texas and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School where she excelled on the school's swim team. Nina attended and graduated from the University of Texas School of Nursing in Galveston, Texas. She met the love of her life, the late Dr. Ross D. Margraves, who graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and they were married in 1936. Dr. Margraves died in 1975.

Nina had an easy-going manner and a great sense of humor, and you always knew where you stood with her. She was frequently teased by her friends and family that she went to nursing school to meet and marry a doctor. She pleaded guilty on both counts.

After helping her husband get his medical practice started upon his return from the South Pacific at the end of World War II, and getting her two children established in school, she enrolled in the University of Houston where she obtained both her BA and MA degrees, with Highest Honors. She taught government at the University of Houston for several years and donated her salary for undergraduate scholarships.

Family and friends were the highlight of Nina's life. She and Ross enjoyed 39 years of marriage and spent most weekends together at the family's ranch in College Station, Texas. When not at their ranch, she regularly played golf at the River Oaks Country Club.

Nina was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, and her grandson, Michael Hoover. She is survived by her two children: Nancy Margraves Hoover and Ross D. Margraves, Jr. and wife Madeline; 7 grandchildren: Elizabeth Hoover Rotan and husband, Matthew; Scott S. Margraves and wife, Lory; Ross D. Margraves, III and wife, Joanne; Susan Margraves Anderson and husband, Michael; Stuart A. Margraves, Lisa Ann Margraves and Paul M. Margraves, II and wife, Amber; her 15 great-grandchildren: Mac Rotan, Nina Rotan, Ellie Rotan, Kate Rotan, Madeline Margraves, Melissa Margraves, Molly Margraves, Megan Margraves, Daniel Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, Sara Margraves, Ross B. Margraves, Sloan Margraves, Daulton Margraves and Max Margraves.

The family especially wants to thank Felicitas Rodriguez and her assistants, Leticia Resendiz, Cirila Camacho and Iliana Carreon for their wonderful care given to Nina over the last four years.

The family will gather for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Nina's memory may be directed to the University of Houston Foundation, 4543 Post Oak Place Drive, Suite 250, Houston, Texas 77027.
