Nolan David Freytag, 57, died peacefully January 5, 2012 at St Mark's Hospital in La Grange after a 12-month battle with lung cancer. He traveled his last days with calmness, dignity and courage. Rev. Stephen Nesrsta of Fayetteville administered the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick a few hours before Nolan's death.
Nolan was born January 10, 1954 to Allen James and Margaret Rollig Freytag at the Weimar hospital. A lifelong resident of Flatonia, Nolan grew up enjoying scouting, hunting and fishing and the wonders of nature around him. He had an assortment of pets including a pair of crows, an injured hawk, a skunk as well as a collie, an Irish setter and lots of cats.
He learned the joy of gardening from his mother and the skills of welding, automotive and machine work from his father. His interests stretched from astronomy to meteorology to bird watching. A gifted conversationalist, he was a treasure trove of information on people and places and how things worked.
During his life, he worked in and later owned Freytag Garage and Machine Shop, his father's business. He also owned and operated the Sportsman's Club on South Penn, worked for the City of Flatonia, did electrical and plumbing work, worked in construction and was an ace at running heavy equipment. Over the past years he worked at Migl's Supermarket where he enjoyed starting his day at "coffee club" with his friends. Always interested in plants and flowers, he found gardening for several Flatonia residents very satisfying.
As a young man, Nolan led a scout troop and was active in the volunteer fire department. People who knew Nolan appreciated his kind heart, fine mind, ready smile and friendly wave of the hand.
Preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Stephen Louis Freytag, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Gene Scheffler of Schulenburg; two nieces, Karla Brazzel and her husband Neil and Kristal Scheffler; three nephews, James Allen Freytag, Matthew Freytag and his wife Natalie and Neil Freytag and his wife Lauren; three grandnephews and two grandnieces and numerous cousins.
A celebration of Nolan's life will be held at tSmith Funeral Home on January 14, 2012 at 10:00 am with Rev.
Joe Hybner officiating. Mike Steinhauser will give the eulogy.
