Nonda May (Hilsenbeck) Sherbo, Gladstone, MO, formerly of Maryville, MO, passed away surrounded by her loving family on December 21, 2016.
She was born October 14, 1944 in Maryville, MO and graduated from Maryville High School, class of 1962. She focused on music during her college studies at Northwest Missouri State University (Maryville, MO). Nonda retired as a Customer Service Manager from General Electric Company in the Major Appliance Division. She spent the first years of her retirement providing childcare. Her yard was a popular hangout for neighborhood kids.
Nonda’s name originated from her Native American maternal grandmother (Zua Nonda) and means “little white cloud of love” in Cherokee. She was a Gold Award winner in Girl Scouts and very active in Campfire USA programs with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren throughout her life. She was also a member of St. Charles Catholic Church (Gladstone, MO) and taught school of religion classes there on Sundays for many years. Few people were able to match Nonda’s outpouring to children, country music, and “all-star” winning at bingo. She spent her extra time enjoying Elvis music, volunteer work, and reading. She loved trips to the library, arts and crafts, and treasured time with her beloved family and friends. Nonda had many unique gifts that included professional cake decorating, sewing, square dancing, and singing. Friends and neighbors cheered when they received Nonda’s homemade crafts or expert baking.
Nonda was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Louise Hilsenbeck, Madge and Joe Yurkovich, brother Joseph Yurkovich, sister Lillian Jenkins, brothers-in-law Gary Butts and Jerry McClain, sister-in-law Shirley Yurkovich, and granddaughter Olivia Ann Schwartz. She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Haines (Ron) of Kansas City, MO, and Michelle Sherbo Schwartz of Leawood, Kansas, and grandchildren Misty Simone (Mike), Flower Mound, TX, Amber Haines, Gladstone, MO, Ronnie Haines (Hayley), Gladstone, MO, Heather Haines, Kansas City, MO, Alexandra Mellor, Lawrence, KS, and great grandchildren Michael and Makayla Simone, Flower Mound, TX. She is also survived by her sisters, Phyllis Abbott (Larry), Maryville, MO, Clara Gilbert (Jerry), Kirbyville, MO, Shirley Butts, Liberty, MO, Kathy McClain, Peculiar, MO, Mary Alice Logan, Roy, Utah, and brothers Frank Yurkovich, St. Joseph, MO, and John Yurkovich (Pam), St. Joseph, MO. There are many nieces, nephews, family and friends left to mourn Nonda’s passing.
Nonda’s visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons White Chapel Funeral Home (6600 NE Antioch Road, Gladstone, MO 64119), with Rosary to follow at 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, December 28th at 10:00am at White Chapel Funeral Home (Gladstone, MO), with graveside services and burial to follow at 1:00pm (Miriam Cemetery in Maryville, MO).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to OATS Public Transportation (West Plains Division of Missouri) or Heartland Kidney Network.

You were a wonderful grandma. I remember all the places you would take me in elementary and middle school. Going to windwood skating and the library, it was always fun. I loved going to the pool and the park on my bike. You will be missed by lots, i will miss you a lot. I will always love you. I will know that you are always with me. I will miss the smile on you face. I love you Grandma Nonda. R.I.P Nonda Sherbo

Nonda and I were nearly the same age, and were around each other a lot growing up. I loved her and am glad she has finally been called home. She is now, at long last, out of pain and distress. Whenever I think of Nonda, I always think about how pretty she was. And how nice. A favorite cousin.
