Nora Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 15, 2017.

Nora J. Smith
Nora (Cashman) Smith, 77 of Binghamton, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on May 13, 2017. She was predeceased by her parents Erwin and Irene Cashman, her siblings Phyllis (Lyle) Goodnough- (Tom) Judge, Blanche La Gier and Bert (Joyce) Cashman. She is survived by her husband of 54 years and the love of her life Bob Smith. She is also survived by her daughter and son-in law Michele (Dana) Farro, the lights of her life, grandchildren Michael and Kaleigh Farro and a special four-legged friend Miss Bonnie-Belle. Sister and brother in-law Grace (Tom) Creagh, and sister, Donna Bartow. She was affectionately known as "Auntie Nora", survived by several nieces and nephews, and one special great-nephew, who always kept an eye on her and Papa, Brian Cashman. She worked in the Broome County Library System for over 30 years at both Binghamton Public Library and Four County Library System. She blessed us with many gifts including, love, friendship, and advice; she was a "straight-shooter". She gave her time selflessly baking hundreds of her famous carrot cakes to support the Port Crane United Methodist church. There was not a weekend morning that Frank Sinatra was not serenading up on "the hill", where she was born, grew up and later raised her family. She enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, baking, visits to Tioga Downs, the Friday Night "hill gatherings" and spending time with her grandchildren, which she termed "a love like no other". She considered herself "the luckiest girl in the world" to be married to someone who loved her as much as Bob. Our family would like to thank the compassionate and caring ICU Team at Wilson Hospital, as well as express gratitude to our friends and family for their outpouring of support and prayers.

Shelly, I am very sorry for your pain during this time. Even though I only met your Mom very briefly, I know she must have been amazing because I have been privileged to watch you for many years coach young girls as only someone who was taught mothering well. The values and character that are you remain a proud reflection of your Mother's life.

Shelly, I am so sorry for your loss. While I never knew Nora, she must have been a remarkable Mom to have raised such a wonderful Daughter (and Mother) as you. You are a shining example of good values and I suspect that Nora gets a lot of the credit for that. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
