Noreen was born on April 14, 1921 in Esther, Missouri and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She attended medical school at Wayne State Medical School and graduated with honors in 1947 as one of only 4 women in her class. She married her husband, Leslie, her medical school classmate, in their freshman year of medical school, on May 19, 1944. They moved first to San Antonio while her husband, Les, was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base and then to Houston, where she worked for the University of Texas Medical School Department of Neurology for the then-Chairman, William S. Fields, M.D.

Her work was initially with Parkinson's patients. She later coordinated nationwide stroke studies with Dr. Fields on the benefits of aspirin to prevent strokes. She has authored numerous medical books and publications in conjunction with the UT Medical School Departments of Neurology, Dermatology, and Anesthesiology, the UT School of Public Health, and the MD Anderson Cancer Center Departments of Hematology, Dermatology, and Neuro-oncology.

She will be remembered for being ahead of her time in her admission to medical school, in an era when very few women entered the field. She will also be remembered for her insight into preventive health measures, which she strived to live by and practiced well before they became mainstream standards.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Leslie L. Lemak, M.D., her son, Michael Lemak, daughter, Margaret Lemak Pfeiffer and husband Dr. William Pfeiffer, son, Robert Lemak and wife Valerie, grandchildren Leslie, Allison and Will Pfeiffer, and Robert James Lemak.

A private family service will be conducted. Donations in Noreen's name can be made to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

"A wonderful testament to your Mom, she was really a pioneer and I am sure you all are so proud." Danni Stewart (Houston, TX)
