Norman was born on December 15th 1934 in Midland to parents C.A. (Gus) Koonce and Opal Hazelwood Koonce. He passed away on January 8th, 2014 at Arbor House Assisted Living and Memory Care in Granbury, TX after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. This came after successfully beating Prostate Cancer, a mild stroke and West Nile Virus. Norman fought the Alzheimer's to the bitter end.

Norman grew up in Martin County, around Lenorah, on the family farm and graduated from Stanton High School in 1953. He ran track and was All-State. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

In 1957 he married Janet Williams and they raised three children. Norman's main profession through life was a farmer and spent many years working his farm in Midland. He also served in the US Army and Army reserves. His other endeavors included being a "Doodlebugger" for Pan American Petroleum in Ft. Stockton and a Fireman for the Midland Fire Department. In addition to his farming duties Norman also found time to put together land deals and several oil and gas deals in and around the Permian Basin. He was also known to buy and sell an old car or truck every once in a while.
For many years Norman was known to roam around Midland taking doughnuts to his friends, family and business associates. His grandsons would anxiously await his arrival on Saturday mornings when he brought glazed, chocolate and "sprinkle" doughnuts.

Those that knew Norman knew he wasn't one to sit around. He loved to travel. He and Janet took several road trips to Tennessee just to visit the mountains and spent many trips with the whole family around Texas visiting family. There were also the motorcycle trips across the country, farm auctions near and far, and the often-adventurous visits to the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction in Scottsdale, AZ in January.

Norman loved his family dearly, especially his five grandsons whom he made feel very special every Christmas.
Norman is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet Koonce of Midland. One son, Gary Koonce and wife Cindy. Daughter Janna Koonce Quattlebaum and husband Robert. Five grandsons – Byron Koonce, Phillip Koonce, Cole Quattlebaum, Blake Quattlebaum and Gentry Quattlebaum, all of Midland. Brother Louie Koonce and wife Evelyn of San Angelo, brother Jerry Koonce and wife Debbie of Midland and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, Gus and Opal Koonce and one son, Dale Wade Koonce, predeceased him.

Pallbearers will be Gary, Byron and Phillip Koonce; Robert, Cole, Blake and Gentry Quattlebaum. Honorary pallbearers: J.D. Crawford, Phil Stroud and Drue Thomas.

Visitation will be held at Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway, Midland, TX on January 10th, 2014 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A service will be held at Ellis Funeral Home on January 11th, 2014 at 1:30pm with graveside to follow at Resthaven cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch or to the charity of your choice.
Finally, special thanks go out to the staff of the Arbor House Assisted Living and Memory Care along with Freedom Hospice Care in Granbury, TX for their care and compassion for Norman and our family during a very difficult time.
