Olga Brannon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2013.

Olga Mardas Brannon

Born March 21, 1924 in Ashland, PA. Her mother and father were immigrants from Greece, and Olga was proud of her Greek heritage and of being able to prepare some of the Greek family recipes. She and her husband, Joe R. Brannon, Sr. were married in Washington DC in 1943, during WWII. Joe was from southeast AL, and they had a few good laughs about ways the two cultures had to blend.

During the years when Joe was in the navy they moved quite a bit and had four sons, Joe, Jr., Larry, Don, and Rick. In July of 1957, Joe and Olga moved their family to Satellite Beach, just as the space race was beginning. They enjoyed being able to watch many of the manned space flights from their back yard.

For many years Olga served as a registered nurse doing private duty in various hospitals in the area and as a staff nurse at Patrick Air Force Base and Brevard Medical Center. Olga and Joe helped start two area Southern Baptist churches. In their last years, they were members at South Patrick Baptist Church in Satellite Beach.

Olga and Joe were married for 63 years before he died in 2006. Olga is survived by three sons, Joe, Jr., Larry, and Don, and their families, as well as by a daughter-in-law, Gloria Brannon Bellis. Olga also has six grandchildren, Jeremy, Phil, Michael, Sean, Ryan and Kimberly; and four great grandchildren, Iain, Cory, Laina and Mason.

This past year, Olga lived at Mission Oaks Assisted Living in Oxford, FL. She died in her sleep there on Sunday morning, August 11, 2013. Services will be held at The Life Event Center, Florida Memorial, Rockledge on Friday, August 16, at 10:00am. A viewing will be held beforehand at 9:30am. The graveside service will immediately follow the funeral service. Services will be led by Rev. Joe Brannon and Rev. Al Evans and will feature music by Don Brannon.

The family requests that instead of flowers, a donation be made to the American Diabetes Association in her memory

I, like many others, are going to miss Olga. She was my Yia. Or Yaya as we erroneously spelled it for years. They say that taste and smell are some of the best memory triggers and they may be true because one thing I really remember about Yia is how good her house smelled. She was an amazing cook. From her Lasagna to the little pita pizzas she made me and my siblings to snack on. We always annoyed her with the way we strung the cheese out, I'm surprised she continued to make them for us. My siblings and I spent many days of our visits in their Florida room playing with Grandfather and Yia's huge collection of wind-up toys. Nick, Sean, Casey, and I worried her when climbed her trees. Either for our safety or for the safety of her fruit. We had a lot of fun at Yia's house and she loved having us over even if we all were a handful. I wish I could have told her I was the one who left a crayon in my pants that she washed so many years ago, but maybe it was best she never knew, we tried her patience enough, I'm sure. We will all miss her. We will all miss her pita pizzas, wind-up toys, beef jerky, grape leaves, baclava, annual christmas ornaments, and tight hugs. Rest in peace Yia. - Grandson Patrick

I met "Mama" Brannon in September of 1971 at Patrick AFB Hospital. I was a new to the AF 2Lt and she was one of my mentors. She told us stories of her training in the Washington DC area and always kept us up to date on what "the boys" were up to. Of course, Joe also figured prominently in her conversations. It saddens me to hear of her passing, but know she is safely with Joe in heaven.

I have known Olga since 1984 when I worked with her at the Patrick AFB, Hospital. I was her Clinical Technician and she taught me so very much while working with her. She has been such a wonderful friend and mentor for the past 29 years. My family and I have had many visits over the years and always kept in touch. She will be greatly missed but now she is with Jesus and her beloved Joe. "Our thoughts and prayers are with you."

What a great person. I have known Olga since 1974 and enjoyed her
bread she always baked. I have missed her in the later years. She and
Joe were always at church at First Baptist in Satellite Beach for many
years.
