Oluwole Adebo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2012.

Prof. Oluwole Adebo passed away in Marietta, GA on September 22, 2012. He was born August 16, 1944 to Chief Simeon and Regina Adebo. His education spanned several countries: Nigeria, the United Kingdom and United States of America. He received a doctorate degree from the University of Ibadan and completed his General Surgery residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, New York. He also completed residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery in Providence, Rhode Island and became a lecturer and Director of Emergency Medical Services at Highland Hospital, Rochester, New York.
A recent clip from his journal reads, "A spiritual rebirth in 1976 altered my life, goals, and perspectives. Working for God became the defining motivation for my endeavors. My motivation for diligence, integrity, and excellence was to please God who gave me purpose".
As of 1987, Wole was a professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, where he also held positions as Head of the Department of Surgery, and Dean. After retiring, God called him to serve with the Nigerian Baptist Convention as Provost of the Bowen University College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Iwo and Chief Medical Director of the Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogbomosho. These were extremely demanding positions with campuses in two different states. In November 2011, Wole fell ill, and began rigorous treatments in the U.S. In the midst of these he made several excruciating trips to Nigeria and back, shuttling between both Bowen campuses. He initially set his term for 2 years, but extended it to relentlessly pursue accreditation for both institutions. This became a reality in July 2012, and Bowen became the only private university with a teaching hospital in Nigeria.
Wole was greatly appreciated all over the world; gifted in teaching and performing surgery in the U.S., U.K., Singapore, and Nigeria. He was a member of several professional societies: the World Heart Federation, the Canadian Society of Thoracic Surgeons (CATS), West African College of Surgeons (WACS), Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS); and served as president of Pan African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) of Nigeria. He was a Fellow of various medical bodies, including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, American College of Chest Physicians, and the International College of Surgeons.
Above all else, Wole's faith and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ were his driving force. He was heavily involved in the Nigerian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (NIFES), where he mentored students and medical professionals. He was president of the Christian Medical Dental Association (CMDA) until June 2012. Mission work was of utmost importance to him, and he founded the Macedonia Foundation which funds missions to rural areas.
Wole was extremely loving, hard working and a man of high ethical standards. His honesty and integrity were without question. Corruption was an abomination to him and he maintained strict adherence to all the values, morals, and ideals he believed in. He was great and, as the saying goes, "Great men leave footprints in the sands of time".
Wole was an avid jogger and loved watching as well as participating in sports including tennis, swimming, and cross country skiing. He was passionate about classical music.
Wole leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Beatrice Taiwo Adebo, 3 daughters: Tola Adebonojo (husband Anthony), Bisi Adesina (husband Dokun) and Tayo Adebo, 2 grandchildren: Daniel and Joy Adebonojo, his 91 yr old mother: Regina Adebo, a sister: Ambassador Funlayo Adebo-Kiencke (husband Tilo) as well as 2 brothers: Biodun and Dipo Adebo.
The family will have a Service of Songs on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 6:00 pm followed by a reception at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill, 1157 Old Canton Rd, Marietta, GA 30068. Funeral service will be held Friday, October 12, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Mt. Paran Church of God.

On this anniversary, I would like to record that my father in law was a great father in law, an true example of a Christian man and husband, father, leader et al. I had the opportunity to watch him for a number of years and all I can say is he was first class in every area of life. He was a quiet giant of a man who I hold even today in very high esteem. I look forward to seeing you in Glory with the apostle Paul and most of all, our Lord Jesus. All my love and until we see you again. Love, Tony

Prof Adebo was one of the most dedicated Christian and a man of integrity, who took God's word at face value, I have ever met. His candour and practical approach to life, vocation and duty with have not been equaled as far as I know in my short pilgrimage on earth. Daddy we continue to miss you, though comforted that we will one day meet at the feet of Christ to part no more. From Bola & Sam Igbokwe with Harachi and Nmeri

We were really shocked to learn of the home call of Daddy Prof Adebo. Only heaven will reward him and his dear wife for their love, generosity and support to God's work and God's servants. We love Prof Adebo. He was until his death a Trustee member of Landmark Mission Church, Enugu, Nigeria. To Mummy Adebo and the children, we say: Jesus is Lord. There is no doubt of Prof's faith and are assured that he is in glory with the Lord. We encourage the rest of the family to continue to follow the God that Prof Adebo served and request all others to seek that same God. All his accomplishment were because of the grace of God.

Its amazing after these few months, how it looks like yesterday that yoi left us. It was like a dream but we have accepted what the holy book says "there is time for everything..." Even death. You touched lives like you should never depart. You gave us the rudiments of medicine. You taught how bold and courageous a surgeon must be. You passionately passed the surgical skills to us. You mentored many to greatness. Your position on issues were never in doubt. You could be easily predicted as you would always stand for the truth. You had a heart for the weak. You were a good teacher, surgeon and administrator. You believed in calling "black" its name in the midst of a confused and corrupt society. Your christian life was excemplary. Adieu, prof, for you live on in our heart! Good night, till we meet again.

He strove for excellence and demonstrated great wisdom with humility. He was kind, gentle, courteous and a great gentleman. I regarded him highly for these and for his demonstration of faith, Christian virtues, godly character and his warmth.

He was among the first who made me feel welcome to a new church as a young wife. I am pained by his passing away but I know he is with Christ and has been greeted 'Well done faithful one' and so take solace that he lives eternally.

Good night Prof. Wole Adebo. Rest in the bosom of the Lord you loved and served.

Dear Bisi and family: I know that you all loved your Father, and he was a great man. You all have inherited his ethics and love of justice. Now we must carry on with the business of the living as he would want you all to do. It will never be easy to have lost him, but he is watching you and guiding you in this life. If I can be of any help with Mum here in Atlanta, please let me know. My prayers are with you all. No one can take away the loving memories that will keep him alive in your hearts until you are reunited with him and the Lord.

Thousands of lives were impacted positively by you (mine included - you taught me through Bisi to manage my resources prudently). You served your generation and generations yet unborn by heeding God's calling and fulfilling His purpose for your life. You certainly left your mark on the sand of time as you served God by serving His children - attributes of a great leader - as explained by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Wole, my "egbon", you were a very caring person. I cannot forget how you used to call at Papa kongi's house and ask about the health of Papa and Mama Kongi (my parents) and sit to talk to them and keep company with them. I thank God for your life. You loved God and served Him faithfully. You were a very good family man who valued Christian marriage. Taiwo and the family will miss you but I pray that God almighty will strengthen and uphold them. We all miss you. You fought a good fight and I believe that you have found peace in the bosom of Jesus Christ. Adieu faithful servant of God. We shall all meet on the resurrection morning.

Tribute to Prof. O. A. Adebo
For three weeks I have lived with the utmost conundrum created by the news of your demise.I wish it was a bad dream, but the reality hold no consolation for our bereaved hearts. Death, you have just struck in the most painful place, and left us shattered.
Prof, you were there throughout my journey in residency training, and at many critical points you showed up; indeed you were there at the day the department conducted interview for us as applicant for appointment as registrars in University College Hospital, Ibadan. You were there in my part 1. Again you were in my part 2, thus I became the last progeny of cardiac surgeon you examined.
Sir, you were a teacher; as senior registrars, we witnessed your untiring efforts, and quality time devoted towards teaching us even beyond the normal closing time. Prof, you made out time, despite your busy schedules to attend all the unit presentations, bringing forth your corrections. I would have been grateful if you had stopped at that, but you still send in questions and, in the most perfect pattern, you detailed to us the outline to follow in answering them. To me you were more than a teacher!
Prof, you never ceased to amaze me with your love and care. While I was away for my program, your emails were source of encouragement that kept me going. Anytime things became hazy, I always ran to you for clarity and you never cease to offer a succinct one. With your exit, I now understand, for the second time, the meaning of a heavy heart.
I and several colleagues here today, won't forget in a hurry your mentorship. We will ever remain grateful for the insights you provided on how to avoid classical mistakes some Surgeons made in the course of their practice. Importantly, you taught me that even in the smallest and trivial things in life I should seek the face of the Lord; you taught me to sacrifice so much for patient care and welfare. To you the patients deserve it all. You were completely detribalized and extend your good will to all without recourse to religion or tribe thus you were a quintessential free citizen of the nation.
Prof, to me, you are still alive; for you live in the hearts of those that you touched with your love. You have left the stage but your footprint is still visible. RIP Prof.

Your father Chief Simeon Adebo was my father's best friend, and your mother Mrs. Adebo was my father's cousin. I remember that when your father was at the United Nations and on his visits to Nigeria, we always visited him daily. I never had the chance to meet you, but I happen to know some of your class mates. Just reading your obituary and the comments showed how good you were. The comments and your concern for fellow human beings are remarkable, and I hope that we have more people like you in the world. Rest In Peace.

I do not know whether to shed tears or burst into shouts of joy
But as I write this my misty eyes cloud
You were many things to me
My teacher, my friend and a father
I revered your quiet efficiency
A teacher of teachers you were
And your teachings have endured for the times
There can never be another You
This is a big void I'll have to live with
And after all we do here
Your life was a true story of laying up treasures in the Right Place
That's where you've gone to be
With the Lord and Master

Dr. Wole Adebo was a great friend to my family. He and his wife were close confidents of my parents, Rev. and Mrs. Don Reece, when Rev. Reece served as Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Baptist Mission. Their friendship continued in the years after my parents retired from mission work in Nigeria and Dr. and Mrs. Adebo were often in my parents' home whenever they travelled to the US to visit their children. I got to know the Adebo family, sitting around the dining room table and discussing our love and concerns for family, for our work, and for Nigeria.
As chairperson of Nigeria Faithful Works, Inc., a non-profit organization committed to partnering with Nigeria institutions like Bowen University Teaching Hospital, I saw first hand Dr. Adebo's deep commitment to his beloved country and to the successful accreditation of BUTH. He was a steady and supportive hand for our bio-medical technology project with BUTH, giving patient advice and encouragement. He will be greatly missed.
May God comfort all of you in this time of loss.

Dear Prof I was your resident in the dept of surgery UCH from 1992 to 1995. Also an intern in 1989. I thank God for all you did for us residents and for me personally. You wrote an excellent letter or reference for me when I was coming over to the US in 1995 It definitely opened doors for me. I also had the privilege of coming to thank you personally in your office in UCH when I came on a visit in 2001. You welcomed me warmly and chatted with me. Rest in peace Sir.

I was introduced to Dr. Abedo by his daughter Bea after he became ill. Although I only knew him for a brief period it was evident that he love the Lord and was passionate about obtaining accreditation for the medical schools in Nigeria. Each time I spoke with him he asked me to pray for success in this matter. I thank God that this has been achieved. I pray blessings on the friends and family and ask God to grant them peace in the assurance they will one day celebrate with Wole in heaven.

I was privileged to be your pastor and one of your admirers for over ten years and have
experienced, first hand, the impact that you made on all who knew you; which will be
remembered for ages, after you are gone.
Several Godly qualities in your life are extra-ordinary: Your dynamic Christian convictions,
Your terrific and relentless pursuit of every one of your God-given and Christ-centered
goals, your perennial hard work and commitment to excellence.
You spend yourself to the uttermost,to move mountains, if needs be, to make a way for those coming behind you.
Hard as you work on daily basis, you were never too tired to smile.
Prof. You are one in a million! An epitome of intelligence, integrity and diligence, all
wrapped up in humility.
A loving husband, a caring dad, a transparently honest friend, and a faithful ambassador for Christ.
Your call to rest was so soon, much sooner than one would have expected;
our consolation is that you finished the race and finished well.
You were ready for your departure and your exit was glorious.
Therefore, WOLE, ADIEU!! AND MAY YOUR HUMBLE SOUL REPOSE
IN PERFECT SHALOM. AMEN AND AMEN!

Solomon O. Abegunde, for the family.

OMOLARAENI AWOKOYA-ADADEVOH

I first met Prof. Adebo while we both served on the Board of the Nigerian Heart Foundation. He was then the President of the Nigerian Cardiac Society, while I was the Executive Sec. of the African Heart Network.

I got to know him better during the General meeting of PASCAR in Accra, Ghana late in 2004.
I was quite impressed with his worldview on many subjects and matters that most people worried about. I also was quick to note that many of his colleagues regarded him with great esteem for his thoroughness in professional matters.
I extend my condolences to his family and trust from all that has been written in the Guest Book that Prof Oluwole Adebo now rests with his Creator.

Peace, Perfect Peace.

Olayemi Omotade

To our Late Chairman Board of Heshed' O Ministries.

He rarely raised his voice except when confronting evil and its perpetration. He never ceased to wonder (painfully) at the ease with which people compromise standards and always with this saying “God's truth! You followed your Master's (Jesus Christ) standards and in so doing set yourself as a standard, an example to be followed both in practice and daily living (Philippians 4:9). We shall continue with the work knowing that God will continue to empower the MINISTRY and with this comforting thought that while Wole‘s voice is silenced in sleep, he yet speaks and now having joined the great crowd of witnesses encompassing us, we will continue the race that God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ have set before us. Fare thee well to our Late Friend and Chairman Board of Heshed'O Ministries.

Professor Adebo was more than an extraordinary teacher to me spanning more than 11 years. He was a father, a guiding hand, a motivator and an eternal optimist urging me on; starting as a Surgical resident in 2001 till I became a Senior Registrar in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He even offered to personally sponsor my Cardiothoracic training abroad if I could not get support from any other source! He was there to guide me with an uncommon wisdom during my neonatal stage as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He offered advice with an uncommon poise and candor urging me to stick to principles and integrity even when facing the greatest odds.

You taught me to pay attention to details. Your extraordinary approach to excellence in patient care is a life-long lesson to me. You taught me the value of humility.

He led with an unmatched principle and example...... Hmm... A great soul has departed this earth!

May the good Lord give the immediate family and the Cardiothoracic family in Ibadan the fortitude to bear the loss. Amen.

Adieu Prof!

He was a man who always shared his opinion on issues whether you are happy with it or not. He does not waste time to conclude meetings to attend to other issues because to him time is precious. I will miss his forthrightness and his "love for a cup of coffee". Good night Prof Adebo.

Ayo and Abimbola Oluwatosin

Our hearts grieve and hurt at your departure. However we give God thanks as we know we shall understand better by and by. Our association with you as a couple and as a family has been a blessing to us. The simplicity with which you related to us has been a lesson to us in our relationship with others. The passion with which you prayed over issues that we shared with you cannot be forgotten.

Our agenda for lunch for the occasion that we were all looking forward to may not accommodate you again but when it comes we will remember the part you played including the words of encouragement and commendation. We seem to hear those words resound now: “Good! Good! Just keep going”. We will miss you immensely

Our dear auntie and dear sisters and brothers, be assured of God's presence and His love and comfort at this time of grieving. He will be there for you now and always.

You inspired me to be a surgeon. You remain a shining example of who a medical teacher, mentor and spiritual counselor all rolled in one should be.You will forever live in my heart and in the hearts of the numerous others whom you have taught, mentored, counselled and loved. And to live in the hearts of those you love,is not to die! A fitting epitaph to your final resting place Prof.,should read "Here lies a man who loved his country and his God".
