AITCHISON, ORIOLE – 97, Halifax. We will deeply miss our much loved Mother and Granny who passed away Sunday, September 11, 2011 at St. Vincent's Nursing Home. Oriole, 97, and her late husband, Prof. James Aitchison, were long term residents of Halifax. Born in Gisborne, NZ, Oriole was a gifted young pianist who won a 5 ½ year scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. She received her performers L.R.A.M, her teachers A.R.C.M, and the certificate of merit, the highest award the academy confers. In 2000, Oriole was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. She loved teaching piano and taught thousands of pupils during the course of her 65 year teaching career. She and Jim were well loved and will be remembered for all they did for others. In addition to piano, Oriole loved hiking, swimming at the Waeg, and spending time with her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends.
Oriole is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Mantey, her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Lisa (Chris) Hill, Lauren & Savannah of Erie, Colorado; Paul (Christine) Mantey, Carolyn, Sonja, & Ryan of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Eileen (Mike) Kilfoil, Jack & Katherine of Halifax.
The family would like to thank Oriole's physician, Dr. Victoria Mitchell, and the wonderful 5th floor staff at St. Vincent's. They had a most positive influence on Oriole's last 6 years, and on the extended family as well.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Oriole's memory can be made to the Halifax Region Children's Aid Foundation or the Amanda's Gift Bursary Program.
A celebration of Oriole's life will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 10:30 am in the chapel at the Atlantic School of Theology.
