Orman Cummings Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 30, 2015.

WINDHAM/FOREST CITY/FORT MYERS, FL –Orman F. Cummings Jr., affectionately known by all as "Bill," passed away March 18 with the loving support of his beloved family. He was 75 years old. His competitive spirit and mental perseverance always allowed him to find the advantage in the face of adversity, an attitude that was with him to the end of his life. Orman was a wealth of knowledge, a creative storyteller, and a great pontificator. One had to be careful when asking him a question unless prepared to hear a very detailed answer with extended elaboration.
His family and friends will cherish all the beautiful memories from East Grand Lake; he put the treasure, in Treasure Island. Some of his fondest memories were drawn from snowmobiling the Gaspe, canoeing and polling on the Allagash River, and hunting moose in New Foundland. On the New Foundland trip, he spent several hours at Customs for firearm and liquor violations along with his late friend, Henry Valente.
He instilled in his family a love and respect for the outdoors, a strong work ethic, and resiliency in the face of adversity. He was a unique man, and cherished all of his children for their own individuality.
He was born in Waterville, ME on January 15, 1940. He attended Kents Hill School class of 1958 and he held Maine State titles in Track and Field. He played Collegiate Football at Michigan Tech and went on to play Semi-Pro Football for the Portland Seahawks. He was a member of the team during the 1960 and 1961 championship years, as featured in the book Images of America: Portland, page 101. He earned his BS from the University of Maine class of 1963 and a JD from the University of Maine School of Law in 1966. His law degree was earned while working full-time and raising three sons. He has been a member of the Maine Bar Association since 1966 (#428 of more than 4,000 today). Later in life, he obtained his Master 100 Ton License, and captained his vessel the Pouilly Fuisse (his favorite French White Burgundy, which pairs well with fish and holds it's own with red meat). He had many adventures on his boat from as far North as Bass Harbor and as far South as the Florida Keys.
Orman is survived by his wife, the love of his life Marjorie J. Traub, his sons:
Orman F. Cummings III and his wife Felicia, grandchildren
Orman F. Cummings IV, his wife Jessica, great-grandchildren Deja and Orman F. Cummings V, Orry Cummings, Kelsey Cummings, and her fiancée Aaron; David Cummings, his wife Kandi and granddaughter Toni Proctor and her husband Eric; Geoffrey Cummings and his wife Elaine, grandchildren Sean Boivin and his wife Bethany, Janelle Cummings and Colby Cummings; and his loving daughters: Courtney Tufts, her husband Lance, granddaughter Amber Tufts, and great-grandchildren Emily and Austin; Casey Reynolds, her husband Todd and his first wife Donna Patch.
He is survived by his brothers Scott Cummings and his wife Angela, Donald Orman Cummings; and sisters Marjorie Batten, her husband Bill, Susan Cummings, and his nieces and nephews.
He will be laid to rest with his baby daughter Kelly and his baby granddaughter Haley.
Orman had a colorful career as an attorney and entrepreneur. He practiced corporate and commercial law, specializing in sales, acquisitions, mergers and consolidations. As a self-made man with a very diversified business history, he negotiated dozens of commercial transactions. During the 1970's, he put his expertise to work and began acquiring numerous businesses. For more than 20 years, he purchased, operated, and sold several companies, some of which included:
Maingas, one of the largest, privately owned LP-Gas companies east of the Mississippi, and operated six retail appliance stores with a restaurant division that sold, installed and serviced commercial kitchen equipment.
Sebago Trading Post, a local Windham business that sold boats, motors, snowmobiles, ATVs, clothing and sporting goods.
Enviropac, a multi-million dollar waste hauling and recycling business.
JMC Development Corporation, a local Windham storage facility.
Crest Enterprises Inc., a parent company for his numerous entrepreneurial endeavors.
He was a principal (usually majority owner) and CEO of all of the above companies and accumulated over 49 years of legal and business experience. He was best described as man determined to conquer any challenge, beat all odds and live life on his own terms. While not without his faults, he was loved, cherished, and respected by all. His children would like to express: "how very proud we are of our dad, and how much we loved him." He was a hard act to follow and left behind a pair of bib overalls, which can never be filled.
