Otmar Olaf Olson was born on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1920, on a farm near Fortuna, North Dakota to parents Olaf and Clara Olson. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in England and Wales for his three years of service. Upon returning to North Dakota, he began his college career. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of North Dakota in 1950 and a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 1955. Following graduation he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Public Service and was the Assistant Director, Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control for the Dakota State Department of Health. In 1965 he joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and relocated to Kansas City, MO. In 1979 he was assigned to a project at the Arizona Department of Health Services in Phoenix, AZ. He met his wife Marilyn, a secretary at ADHS, and they were married on June 28, 1980. Upon completion of his project in Phoenix, Otmar and Marilyn returned to the EPA in Kansas City. He retired from the EPA in 1982, and he and Marilyn moved back to Phoenix, where he received a position as a public health inspector with the Maricopa County Health Department. He served in this position until his retirement in April 1987. Following retirement Mr. Olson kept his registration current as a Professional Engineer with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. He was busy remodeling the home he and Marilyn shared in Scottsdale, he designed the plans and architectural drawings for the cabin built on the 40-acre site he and Marilyn purchased a few years earlier. His hobbies include oil painting and stained glass artworks. Otmar also found time to be there for family and friends whenever the need arose.
Otmar is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; sons Dana (Jana) and Darol; Step-children Robert, Michael (Kay), Elizabeth (Brian); grandchildren Autumn (DJ) and Leif; step-grandchild Geoffrey (Christina); great-grandchildren Danni, Ireland; Step-great grandson Hayden.
