Palmer Miles Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2013.

On Thursday, April 25, Palmer Gannon Miles graduated from this earthly realm to the eternal. After a courageous eight year battle with cancer, he spent his last days on earth at home surrounded by his family and friends. Though his body had become weak and frail, he never lost the desire to responsibly provide for and protect his loved ones.

His story began on August 8, 1960 in Duval County, Florida. His parents, Dr. George Gregory and Elizabeth Palmer Miles, quietly instilled in him the old fashioned values of working hard to achieve your goals, take charge of your destiny and strive for perfectionism. A lifelong passion for the game of baseball began in his early childhood and was passed on to his sons. Upon graduating from Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, Palmer attended Emory University in Atlanta. After two years he transferred to the University of Central Florida where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. During his fifth year at UCF he completed his CPA requirements.

Palmer began his professional career as an audit accountant with BDO Seidman, LLP in 1988. After thirteen years, he opened his own firm providing services exclusively to R. J. Bersch & Company, LLC. Several years later, he accepted the position of the Director of the audit department for Tcshopp, Whitcomb & Orr, PA. In 2006 he became the senior manager in the audit department for BKHM, PA. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the University of Central Florida Alumni Association as well as the Golden Knights Club.

As a member of the St. Andrew United Methodist Church, he served as the Chairman of the Finance Committee for many years. Other volunteer position in the community included treasurer of the Home Owners Association, treasurer of the NOKLL and various coaching positions with little league baseball teams.

Following his marriage in 1995 to Christy, he found a new love in helping to care for her family properties in South Georgia. "Palmer the farmer" loved to shed his city clothes, don his straw hat or camo cap, hook the bush hog to the tractor, mow all day, and build a campfire at sundown; and somewhere in between hunt and fish!!!! He will long be remembered for his disciplined approach to life, his love of all sports, and most importantly his devotion to family.

Mr. Miles is survived by his wife, Christy Hodges Miles and two sons, John Palmer Miles and Robbie George Miles, Winter Park; a brother, Greg Miles and his wife Susan of Winter Park; a sister-in-law, Vonda Fields and her husband David of Orlando; six nieces and nephews; Mary Elizabeth Lluoma of Miami, Kirby & Gannon Miles, and Garret, Connor & Morgan Fields all of the Orlando area; an aunt and uncle, Dr. & Mrs. David Blair of Princeton, NJ; a God-mother, Aunt Dottie Cole; as well as a large extended family and many dear friends that have been there for him over the past months in his time of need. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 pm at Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home in Winter Park. Funeral services will be Monday at 10 am at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Winter Park with Dr. Harold Custer officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christy Miles for the educational development of Palmer's sons at New Traditions Bank, 600 Wilkinson St., Suite 100, Orlando, FL 32803, (407) 206-7800.

Palmer was my supervisor at Tschopp, Whitcomb & Orr. He had a great sense of humor and he taught me to be well disciplined and professional. He was well respected as a co-worker, husband and father. I will never forget the trip to Baltimore when we somehow missed the exit to the airport twice. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Palmer was one of the good ones. Such a sweet guy with a great sense of humor. I am reminiscing about the many softball games played and football games watched at UCF and the softball games and times at Shells afterwards with you guys and my mom. My deepest sympathy to you and the boys.

Palmer was a great example of what a stand up human being should be. We started as coworkers and I am proud that we became friends. He taught me a lot about friendship and dedication to family. I have many fond memories of the fun times we had together waterskiing, playing golf and watching UCF football. He will be missed. Karen and my thoughts and prayers are with you in this incredibly difficult time.

Christy, J.P., and Robbie, just a short note to say Palmer will be missed by many which is evident by the attendance earlier today. Quite a tribute that so many showed up to show, and share their love and support. I have many fond memories of Palmer on Lake Bessie, and I know you will cherish your memories as I will. Also I just want to acknowledge how proud Palmer was of his two boys and loving wife. What a great family! Love and prayers to you all, Jim.

Christy & family,

I'm so sorry to hear of Palmer's passing. I was priviledged to work with Palmer for several years. He was a true professional but always a pleasure to be around even as we worked through some challenging jobs together.

I will miss Palmer's dry humor and sometimes feisty disposition. All the years of NOKLL wouldn't have been the same without him for sure. I will remember Palmer fondly and know that when I see JP and Robbie there is a lot of their dad in them.

We were privileged to be the Miles family neighbors in Merritt Park for 30+ years. We watched Palmer and Greg develop from young boys to outstanding young men. Our memories are all good of those days.
Saying good bye to those we love is always difficult and it is especially so in Palmer's case.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you,
Kay and Norm Pricher

For many a season our families shared summer vacations on Florida's beaches. Long days were spent under the shade of a beach tent sipping "Palmeritas" and practicing due diligence in not letting our or anyone else's children get too far out in the surf. We enjoyed each other's company immensely as we cussed and discussed the topics of the day. I got to know a tough, pragmatic and loving family man who shared with me what can only be described as a very "wry" sense of humor! Good times! Recently in one of Palmer's hospital stays some hapless Internist was foolish enough to cross Palmer and I was able to witness what I told him was the tenacity and fortitude that I hoped I would possess given a similar circumstance. I told him that day and many times before that he was my "Hero" for beating the odds and getting to spend as much time in this life as he could! I will lament Palmers passing but spend the coming days celebrating and reflecting having had the opportunity to enjoy his company and to know him. God speed Palmer Miles!!!

How sad to read that such a fine young man has departed in the middle of his life. Please accept my sincere condolences. Will always remember Palmer's parents (Betty and George) driving me to Sanford, Florida to attend a Jazz Concert by The Preservation Hall Band of New Orleans. Enjoyed having Palmer as a student at Trinity Prep. Also Enjoyed Coaching and teaching Palmer's older brother, Greg at Trinity. Both Brothers' life accomplishments have certainly been stellar and outstanding tributes to Trinity Preparatory School. Am certain the entire Trinity Prep family joins in sending it's deepest sympathies. Palmer's untimely death is yet another challenge to our faith. God bless and keep all family members during your time of grief. Randy Moore, Coach, Teacher, Friend (Trinity Prep, 1968-1974). From: Thailand.

We truly "Celebrate the Life" of Palmer.
Many good times with the extended family will be remembered. No matter the setting or circumstance; good, often dry humor was shared by him. Palmer exhibited great courage and love for his family.
Christy, John Palmer and Robbie - Hold on to God's hand; He will sustain you.
We love you.

A delightful and wonderful human being. Always a smile and good humor. His love for his family was evident. He was a wonderful addition to a Blair family bike trip across Nova Scotia many years ago. Camping out, teasing us, gleefully passing us on the hills. What a loss.
With Love,
Barbara Blair Randall
