Patricia, known as Trish to her family, spent her growing up years in Donna, Texas. As a child, she made the decision to follow Jesus and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Donna. She graduated from Donna High School in 1942 and attended the University of Texas where she began her studies in Dietetics. She graduated from Texas Women's University in 1947 and began work as a licensed, registered dietitian at Parkland Hospital and Baylor Hospitals in Dallas and Hermann Hospital in Houston. Patricia served in numerous volunteer positions with the Texas Dietetic Association and the American Dietetic Association. Upon her retirement from the V.A., it was determined that more than 200 dietitians serving across the United States were graduates of programs under her stewardship.

In 1960, Patricia married Ray Elton Calmes, a widower with two children, Sharon and Michael. Her greatest fulfillment and joy was being a mother to those two children.
