Patricia J Hamlin, 82, passed from this life to her eternal home Sunday, June 15, 2014.

Pat was born in Chicago, IL on February 29, 1932 to Ralph B and Gladys E Rogers. She grew up in Ravenna, Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University in 1954 with a BA in journalism, following her father and grandfather in the trade. She gained editorial experience at several northern Michigan newspapers before founding the Straitsland Resorter in 1956 in Indian River, Michigan. During this time she married Richard C. King and raised 5 children. In the formative years of the newspaper, Pat witnessed and reported on an array of historical developments in northern Michigan, including the construction and completion of the Mackinac Bridge, the delivery and installation of The Cross In The Woods, and the construction of I-75.

In 1968 she sold the Resorter (it still thrives today) and married Bruce D Hamlin. They added a sixth child, Bruce, Jr., to the family, and eventually settled in Highland in 1973.

Her numerous involvements over the years include coaching girls' softball, ------ youth fundraising, Seven Harbors Association, Highland Township Planning Committee, Highland Methodist Church newsletter, the church handbell choir, bridge games, Musicale, and organizing the Founders Day Parade. She ushered many plays at Detroit's big theaters so she could satisfy her love of music and the stage. She loved sports, whether it was her kids playing or her beloved alma mater, MSU.

Her loving survivors are brother Ralph (Gladys) Rogers, sisters Barb Rogers and Elizabeth C.; children Richele (Gary) Howard, Jill King, Richard R. King, Kristi (George) Thomas, Bruce R (Colleen) Hamlin, and special niece and caretaker, Michele (Dave) Ross; grandchildren Chris, Chelsea, Richard, Thora, Jonah, Kendall, Nicole, Violet, Yvonne, and many beloved nephews and nieces; great-grandchildren Jasmine and Sophia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 45 years, Bruce D. Hamlin, and one son, Craig C. King.

She will be very missed by friends and family alike. She set us all a fine example to keep compassion and a positive outlook on life; she was certainly a conduit for God's love with her faith and actions.

Memorial Visitation will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Friday, June 20, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 3295 E. Highland Rd., Highland. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Highland United Methodist Church, 680 W. Livingston Rd., Highland.
