LISBON: In the early morn of April 4, 2013, Paul R. Black passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife at his side. He was born and educated in Pittsburg, Pa. At the age of 17 he joined the US Coast Guard and proudly served his country for 20 years. On February 18, 1952 he earned the USCG Silver Life-Saving Medal for heroic action, engaged in the rescue of survivors of the tanker SS Fort Mercer off the coast of Cape Cod in the midst of an epic storm. A true family man, Paul cherished his ever-growing family, valuing time spent with children and grandchildren above everything else. He was the proud patriarch of three generations, and is highly regarded by each of his offspring as thoughtful, wise, fun and caring. He famously hosted a multitude of rambunctious family outings, including baseball games, vacations and weekly get togethers; his holiday parties are legendary! Paul's guidance, understanding and generosity defines this kind man whose family was his greatest achievement - and whose boundless love is his legacy. In addition to his cherished wife Claire, whom he married on February 18,1972, he is survived by their 5 daughters: Debbie and Steve Daggett of Sabattus, Bonny and Kevin Hartnett of Tucson Arizona, Karen Smith of Leeds, Carol and Roger Levesque of Durham and Louann and Marc Bisson of Sabattus. He is also survived by l5 grandchildren and l6 great grandchildren. You are invited to share your thoughts, condolences and fond memories of Paul through his online guest book at www.crosmanfuneralhome.com Also, the family would like to invite you to view Paul's WCSH interview on Crosman Funeral Home's facebook page. There is a link on the page to the video. A celebration of Paul's life will be held on Wednesday April 10th at 1:00pm at the Shiloh Chapel, Beulah Lane, Durham Me. A Coastie has crossed the bar and gone to sea, that is how we in the Coast Guard recognize our members that have passed. Paul achieved heroic actions that attribute to the man he was. 61 years ago his ship, the Cutter Yakutat responded to the M/V Fort Mercer that had been split in two during a brutal Nor'easter . With the ship split in two pieces and many failed attempts buy the Cutter to rescue her crew they launched their small boat manned by Paul as the engineer and three others to go to work. 32 lives were save that day off Cape Cod and without the courage and selfless acts by Paul and his crew they would have perished. For his actions Paul was awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal. This is one of the Coast Guards highest honors. His actions are a lesson for all men that take to the sea, he was a true hero and we honor him then and today. Fair winds and following seas Paul, rest well for we have the watch.

Our hearts are heavy here in Tennessee. I stumbled across his book, The Finest Hour when spring cleaning this past weekend (Mike & I are still unpacking things from our move in December!!). I knew right then and there he was speaking to me. What wonderful stories he would tell, and how I wish I could have heard more. Until then......love you so very much.
