Paul Winters Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 5, 2013.

Good natured and bright spirited throughout his life, Paul Allen Winters, 56, of Ann Arbor, MI died peacefully in his home on July 3, 2013 after a year-long battle with cancer. Paul is survived by Jane, his beloved wife of twenty-eight years, children Peter and Lisa, parents Douglas and Carol Winters, brothers Bruce (Renee) Winters, Mark (Connie) Winters, Kevin (Margo) Winters, and Aaron (Cathy) Winters, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Paul cherished family above all else. Affectionately known as 'my favorite nephew' or 'my coolest uncle', he loved family gatherings with his four brothers, always teasing his parents, but honoring them for raising him with strong family values. As a young boy, he enjoyed catching frogs, playing baseball, and fishing with his dad. There was never a dull moment in his childhood filled with daring adventures with his brothers.

Though born July 1, 1957 in Adrian, MI, Paul grew up in Ann Arbor and was a graduate of Huron High School. He attended Eastern Michigan University before earning his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1980.

He began his career as an environmental engineer in the automotive industry before joining the City of Ann Arbor in 1994. As a public housing official, Paul cared deeply for tenants. He was a great listener who always had a ready smile and caring words. He later worked for the Building Department, ensuring tenant safety as a housing inspector.

Paul was an avid bicycle rider, whose greatest accomplishment was riding his bicycle across the United States with his brother in the summer of 1977. Paul played on many local volleyball teams for over 30 years, and many will remember him as a beloved teammate on the volleyball court, with impressive cheese shots and as a skilled blocker. Everyone fortunate enough to know Paul and be a part of his life knew him as a kind, funny, loyal friend, who had a fondness for coffee and Washtenaw Dairy donuts.

He was an exceptional father to his children, with much time spent coaching them on the volleyball court, hiking in the Grand Canyon, and baking his favorite chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. Paul's enthusiasm for the outdoors led his family on great hiking, camping, fishing, and skiing adventures. One of his greatest joys was time spent at the family cabin, where he and his wife shared their curiosity and love of nature with their children.

The family will hold a visitation at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 South Fourth Ave, Ann Arbor on Friday, July 12, from 4:00-7:00pm. Following private inurnment, a memorial service for Paul will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 2:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, 1432 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Park Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Please visit www.muehligannarbor.com

Sometime around 1987, Paul and I worked at an environmental engineering company in Ann Arbor. We went to a manufacturing plant in Defiance, OH to take temperature readings from a cooling water lagoon system. It was incredibly hot and humid, and we had to cut through thick brush, swarming with mosquitoes to get to the sampling locations. It was an absolutely terrible job, but one of the best work experiences I ever had, because I worked with Paul. We talked and laughed about that job the whole time we worked together. Paul is a great guy, and someone I'll always be thankful for that I got to know and work with.

Jane and family,
So sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I did have the pleasure of knowing Paul as a teammate on one of his AA volleyball teams and even more importantly, as a friend! I did get to play on team with him! (softball, too) Until I read the dedication to Paul and the entries in this guest book I had forgotten about his famous "cheese shots" that left opposing blockers standing beside their own gym clothes! I also loved his biking stories about his cross country trip with his brother. Paul was truly a great team member and a great person. My condolences.
Sincerely,
Ned Barden

Oh gosh...this sent me right back to 7th grade at Scarlett...he would have been my first boyfriend had either one of us known what to do with those jumbled scary juvenile feelings. Many, many years later he ran into my dad who was with my daughter who recognized his name from my stories of the "olden days". It sounds as though he was a good man, he will be missed and remembered.

My deepest regrets and sorrow for the loss on an old dear friend. Paul was the East Ann Arbor Merchant's flawless short stop for years and a dedicated team player. Always full of encouragement and optimism. He brought out the good in others. I am so very sorry to learn about this and wish the entire Winter's family the very best during this difficult time.

Winters families,

I lived right next to Doug and Carol for many years as a kid. I remember the three younger boys the most and can recall many fun days playing with the big boys and feeling safe and included. They, including Paul showed me how to hold a snake the right way, got to ride my first mini bike, played in the big puddle in the yard during heavy rains, dug more holes in their yard than we can count and had the best snow igloos in town. Paul was part of a loving caring family and I wish you all comfort knowing how much we all learned from you and him.

Winters Family & Friends -
First I want to tell you that this written description of Paul was moving. Although it did not completely capture his pure, joyful, fun-loving spirit, it sure came close, and I thank you for sharing.
I worked with Paul for close to 9 years in the Rental Housing and he was always doing what was best for our clients. I am thankful to have known Paul and have missed not having him here (and missed his cookies). I have thought of your family often throughout this year and can only hope that the love that Paul felf for you carries you through these times of grief. May peace find your family.

I worked with Paul for many years in the Housing Inspection Bureau, City of Ann Arbor. I am so sorry to hear of your loss and also ours. Paul was probably one of the most caring, calm and laid back persons I have ever met; a rare quality. Even with the sometimes difficult situations he dealt with as a Housing Inspector he very rarely had a negative thing to say about anyone because that is just who he was. Although I never knew you, his family; I "knew" you because I knew Paul and of his great love for you. He will be missed.

If you looked up "truly nice person" in the dictionary you would see that smiling picture of Paul. He had that Winters gene for pleasant personality. Always upbeat, dedicated to his family a true gentleman on and off the volleyball court where I had the pleasure of playing with him. A gifted athlete and an ambassador of sportsmanship. I will miss his smile as he blocked you or dribbled his famous "cheese shot" over you head. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many, many people that called him friend.

July 8, 2013

My condolences to the entire Winters family. I also served on the M.A.H.O board with Paul for many years and miss his sense of humor.

I have to say I always looked up to Paul, Growing up Bruce & Renee took all of us "little kids" skiing, The very 1st day Paul was out doing all of us on the slopes, I was always trying to keep up, but fell short.
Being around him & watching him with his family helped me be a better person.
Paul will be greatly missed.

Dear Jane, I just read about Paul's passing and am deeply sorry for your loss. Although I never met him, and you & I have only known each other a short time, I got the exact impression as you describe in the obituary - a fun-loving, adventurist kind of guy. Also, my husband described him as one of the fairest inspectors of our rental home. Unfortunately, I am out of town and won't be able to attend the memorial. Hugs to you and the children.

I first got to know Paul when we coached Peter and Lisa's Rec & Ed volleyball team together. Later, he learned how to keep score, and helped out at Huron volleyball matches that I reffed. We played with and against each other in the Ann Arbor rec leagues, and at pick-up games at the County Rec Center. He was always such a positive example of good sportsmanship, and a genuinely nice person. My condolences to Jane, Peter and Lisa- he is definitely missed.

Dear Jane, Lisa and Peter,

As you know, I worked side by side with Paul for close to 15 years. Your tribute in the newspaper really captured who he was. Yes, he loved the outdoors. Yes, he loved volleyball. Yes, he loved Washtenaw Dairy coffee and maple donuts. Yes, he was a kind, caring, intelligent person. And most of all, yes he loved his family. Before I even met you, I felt like I knew you. From the family pictures of you on his desk at work to the stories he told of your great adventures together, like visiting the Grand Canyon and taking the kids to college. It was obvious he loved you all so much and that he was proud of his family. I will miss him.

So sad to read about this. I am a landlord, and Paul was always so reasonable, helpful, and easy to work with. Indeed, he cared greatly for tenants, but he also was a friend to landlords, striving for reasonable compromise and "meeting in the middle." My thoughts go out to his family.

July 7, 2013

I was unaware that Paul was ill, such a loss. Paul always had a smile on his face and was such a nice, kind and positive person. He will be deeply missed by everyone that knew him. My condolence to the family. RIP John Ramirez

Dear Jane, Peter and Lisa...I am so sorry and sad for your loss. Working with and sitting right next to Paul at the Housing Bureau for many years has brought many wonderful memories in my life. His dedication, laughter, joking, support and yes, the delicious chocolate oatmeal cookies will forever be reminders of how he has blessed my life. I'm sad to see his life end so early because I know that he had so much more give to you and all those that he encountered. I pray that you will feel God's love and peace during this most difficult time.
