Danvers - Pearl "Pat" Shmishkiss, age 93, late of Swampscott, died on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the Hunt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Danvers. Born and educated in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Julius Bernfeld and Bessie (Elkin) Bernfeld and resided on the North Shore her entire life. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Dental Hygiene and received a Master's Degree in Recreation Therapy from Northeastern University. Danvers - Pearl "Pat" Shmishkiss, age 93, late of Swampscott, died on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the Hunt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Danvers. Born and educated in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Julius Bernfeld and Bessie (Elkin) Bernfeld and resided on the North Shore her entire life. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Dental Hygiene and received a Master's Degree in Recreation Therapy from Northeastern University.
Pat was a professional actress in stage, films and television for more than 35 years, using the stage name Pat Elkin. She was a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) since 1972 and the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists (AFTRA.) She appeared in more than 70 Hollywood films including Mystic River, The Crucible, Fever Pitch, The Friends of Eddie Coyle as well as performances at summer stock, regional theater, dinner theater and the TV series Spencer for Hire, the TV miniseries Kennedy and various commercials.
Besides her acting, Pat was a recreational therapist working with veterans at the Soldiers Home and Quigley Memorial Hospital, both in Chelsea, for nine years, and a substitute teacher in the Swampscott, Salem and Lynn public schools. She also taught a training course to activity directors in nursing homes at Bunker Hill Community College for eight semesters.
Pat was a member of Temple Beth El in Swampscott (now Congregation Shirat Hayam,) where she had also served on the Sisterhood Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Jewish memorial Hospital North Shore Auxiliary, Jewish Rehabilitation Center Auxiliary, Jewish Family Service, a founder in 1946 of the Marblehead-Swampscott Chapter of Hadassah and one of the first volunteers at the Jewish Rehabilitation Center of the North Shore, formerly in Swampscott. She lived in Marblehead for 18 years before moving to Swampscott.
Pat was the devoted mother of Richard Shmishkiss and his wife Jane Moscow of Canton and Joan (Shmishkiss) Lawrence and her husband John Lawrence of Methuen as well as a dear grandmother to Laura Shmishkiss, Trevor Lawrence and Bryan Lawrence. She was also the cherished sister of the late Charlotte Rothbardt, Stanley Bernfeld, Walter Bernfeld, Irma Jaffee and Doris Schecter. She was the former wife of the late Stanley Shmishkiss, with whom she sharried 40 years of marriage.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, July 11th, 2:00 pm at the Temple Beth El Cemetery on Lowell Street in Peabody. Memorial observances in her memory will be held at the home of Richard Shmishkiss and Jane Moscow on Saturday evening, July 12th. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be donated to Jewish Family & Children's Service, 1430 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451.
