--Martin Luther King, Jr.
Penny Perkins, who served as the administrative assistant here at Christ's Church until this past April, passed away Sunday, June 10 at Sky Ridge Medical Center following surgery. Though she had been unwell for quite some time, her passing was unexpected. So, we, her church family, did not have the opportunity to express our appreciation for her friendship or acknowledge her many contributions to our community. However, we take comfort in knowing that her soul is now in the place of eternal love and appreciation. We give thanks for her life and how she enriched ours with daily acts of quiet loving kindness. She was empathetic, thoughtful, and funny, and she will be missed.
Penny's unassuming manner belied the vividness of her life experiences. She was born in 1945. In addition to possessing Martin Luther King's "heart full of grace," she made subjects and verbs agree very well indeed as she earned her BA from Louisiana State University, where she majored in English Literature. She parlayed her writing talent and love of sports into a career as an award-winning reporter, employed by newspapers in Louisiana and Colorado, where she served as a sportswriter, feature writer and news editor, covering town and local government events. (One memorable highlight? She interviewed the legendary football player Ed "Too Tall" Jones.) She spent eleven years as the adult literacy program coordinator for Douglas County Libraries. Penny received awards from the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, the Colorado Press Association, and served on the Colorado Press Association Freedom of Information Committee that helped draft legislation resulting in state open meetings and open records laws.
Penny's passions were her cats, words, and sports. She read voraciously, an eclectic mix of genres, from history to news to mystery novels. She watched every major sports events on TV that she could, and she particularly loved baseball.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents, La Jeanne W. Perkins and James H. Perkins.
A memorial service for Penny will be scheduled later this summer at Christ's Church.
