Pete Torrez, Sr. 83, of Greeley, died February 5, 2013 at the Hospice Inpatient unit, North Colorado Medical Center. He was born June 29, 1929 in Wichita, Kansas to Manuel M. and Ruperta (Hernandez) Torrez. Pete grew up in Ovid, graduating in 1948 from Ovid High School. After graduation, he worked at the Ordinance Depot in Sidney, Nebraska. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950. He served during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. Pete grew up in Ovid, graduating in 1948 from Ovid High School. After graduation, he worked at the Ordinance Depot in Sidney, Nebraska. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950. He served during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. He was honorably discharged in October of 1952 and returned to Ovid. Pete was a life member of Veterans Of Foreign War. He was a member of the Jake Uhrig Post No. 3541, VFW, Sterling serving as post commander. He was also the District Chaplin and a 3 time delegate of the VFW National Convention between 1965 and 1967. He later became a member of George B. Williams Post No. 2841, Brighton.
Pete attended Barber College at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School in Denver and served his 2 year apprenticeship in Sterling. Pete was married Jacqueline "Jackie" Cervantez on June 9, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, by Father Schumasky, in Sutherland, Nebraska. The lived in Sterling from 1956-1968 and then moved to Ft. Lupton. He worked for Red Dale Manufacturing in Longmont and then Cottonwood Barbers from 1978 until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church of Greeley.
Pete is survived by his wife of 57 years Jacqueline Torrez of Greeley; two sons Pete (Judy) of Ft. Lupton and James (Brenda) of Milliken; one daughter Roseanne (Damon) Floyd of North Platte, Nebraska; son-in-law Ted Engle; one brother Raymond (Grace) of Denver; one sister Elsie of Ft. Lupton; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Cynthia Engle; three brothers Bill, Pat and Manual; grandson Pete Torrez and one niece Tina Blea.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Liturgy Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
