Peter Y. (Yuen Soo) Hui

Born: November 20, 1939, Toishan, China.

Died: June 18, 2017, San Diego

Hui Yuen Soo (Peter) was born in a village in Toishan, China. He grew up in Hong Kong and came to the United States when he was 13. He attended Memorial Junior High School, then San Diego High School. He graduated in 1960. He owned and operated New Life Chinese Laundry, which his grandfather and father began on Fifth and Pennsylvania avenues in Hillcrest. They moved the laundry in 1961 to its current location on Granada Avenue in North Park. He was introduced to Grace Chan by her cousin in Hong Kong, who attended the same church as his mother, Mrs. Ching Lin Wong Hui. They were married at the Kowloon Methodist Church on August 16, 1965. Grace joined him in San Diego and together they worked at the laundry.

In 1977 they opened the House of Hui Chinese Restaurant in Point Loma. At age 62, he began retirement. This was also about the time he began to plan trips to China. He wanted to return to the village where he was born. In the years to follow, he would make contributions to help rebuild the family home; repave the roads; and build a volleyball court and community gate. He was a founding, and active member of the Chinese Evangelical Church of San Diego.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Yeo Shung Hui, and Ching Lin Wong Hui. Loving husband of Grace; beloved father of four daughters: Hannah Wong (James); Elina Ly (Peter); Janet Chiu (Steven); and Terry; and son, Simon (Ivy). Beloved grandfather of: Audrey, Amelia, Noah, Sarah, Jonah, Catherine, Olivia, and Penelope.

Numerous cousins and aunts.
