Peter Canga Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2013.

Peter Anthony Canga passed away peacefully on Dec. 26th after enjoying Christmas day with his family. He was 87 years old. He was born in New York City to Pedro and Luzmila while his father was in America on military training.

In his long life, Peter helped raise his brothers and sisters after his father died tragically while on duty. He returned to the US in 1947 and became a flier in the Army Air Corps serving for 26 years including the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, the Cold War, and Vietnam. He attended night school while stationed in Tokyo to earn a Bachelors Degree and later became an independent businessman. His work helped rural Texas communities create transportation systems for the poor and elderly. He recently rekindled his Catholic faith and earned a 4th degree with the Knights of Columbus. Until a few months ago he taught English as a second language at St. Elizabeth Church in Pflugerville.

Peter was the last surviving member of his family from Peru. He was comforted in the knowledge that they were waiting to receive him with open arms. He leaves behind a wife Matilde, sons Michael, Peter, Garry, Carl and three grandchildren. He also leaves behind the extended family he helped sponsor to immigrate to America. His joy was his family and he enthusiastically involved himself in our hobbies and recreational activities though out his life.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Pflugerville. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Memorial Hill Cemetery.

His final Christmas toast was the importance of loving each other.

I have warm and vivid memories of Mr. Canga as I knew him in my high school years and beyond. He graciously welcomed me in his home and family. He was an enthusiastic father and a good husband who along with his beautiful and nurturing wife, Tillie, raised 4 responsible and successful sons. The values and ethics that Peter and Tillie taught their sons are reflected in the great men that they are today. I hope you take pride and comfort from his faith and courage and his life well lived. I will continue to keep Tillie in a special place in my heart and my prayers.

I was privileged to have Peter as a friend and colleagues for over thirty years. We worked together on many things but especially on transportation and economic development. The needs to help people by addressing their needs for basic access and opportunity was something that was in the forefront of his thinking and work at all times. I felt then as I do now that his Catholic faith was at the heart of what he sought to do for others.

He was wise, generous, kind, considerate and always optimistic person----something we should all hope to be. I know how much he loved his family especially Tilly to whom we send our thought and prayers today. Most of all we send her our thanks for sharing Pete with the rest of us----and for being such good friends-------we shall treasure our time together always.

Our very sincere sympathy,

Dale and Jean Marsico, Stafford Virginia.

We had the privilege of being Pete & Tillie's neighbors for 37 wonderful years. They are the finest examples of family you could hope to find in this fast moving world. So caring, thoughtful, friendly, intelligent, and many other adjectives available. Pete was a perfect example of what a husband, father, relative, and friend should be. We and many others mourn his passing. He is now in GOD'S hands and probably teaching and sharing his wisdom in Heaven. We pray for Tillie to stay strong and to draw strength from her deep faith in GOD.

I will always remember the Paris bakery when you told me to "pick anything you want and as much as you want"! When you learned you were going to be a "grandpa" for the first time. I will think of you every time I enter a bakery. I bet you are at a coffee bar right now! We will see you later,

I have been Pete and Tillie's next door neighbor since they moved in. It has always been a pleasure just to be in their company. Some of the sweetest people I have ever met. Sad to loose such a great neighbor. I hope the coming years will be as good to Tilly as she deserves.

Peter was a great man and I was privileged to work with him for many years. Every time you see a small bus or van in rural Texas, you can thank Peter for his work in establishing those vital transit services. Peter was truly a trailblazer and a gracious, witty friend. Godspeed!

I don't generally leave condolences to those I didn't know… but reading about this Man and his life of giving to family, America and the World— puts him high on the list of great human beings. I'm sure many will raise their glass to honor him and his Christmas toast…
