Philip Harold Lanham, born May 21, 1922 to Olga Vere Lanham and Harold Guy Lanham of Indianapolis, Indiana, entered rest on January 17, 2013 at the age of 90. He married Myra Jane Myers on August 7, 1942. Together, they celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2012.
In high school, Phil and his brother Ted were self-employed, operating a model airplane shop. Phil attended Purdue University before entering into the Air Force. The newlyweds were stationed in San Antonio and lived with the ranching family, Driskill and Ruby Kothmann, of stockyard heritage.
After the war, Phil was employed at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis. Phil moved the family in 1953 to Missouri where he was employed by TUMS for the Tummy. After 7 years, he resigned from TUMS to start up his own company, The Systemation Corporation, which designed and manufactured large- scale machinery for food corporations.
Phil had a wonderful voice and loved to sing and whistle. He performed in local barbershop quartets and musicals while living in the St. Louis neighborhood, Warson Woods. The garage at his home was always filled with antique cars, and he loved driving his children and their friends around in his Model T.
He had a love of San Antonio and returned there in 1963 to serve as the Chief Engineer of Lone Star Brewery. During that time, the family spent many weekends on Lake Medina. The family moved to Houston in 1965 when he changed his work focus to sales. Phil remained in Houston after his retirement in 1982. He loved travel, new adventures, designing and building model planes and boats, and the ocean. Much of his free time was spent fishing near his beach house in Galveston.
Phil was a member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. During the last 20 years, Phil was active in several church sponsored resale shops. He mastered the art of repairing any and everything that came in the door.
He was preceded in death, by his brother Robert who died at age 5. He is survived by his younger brother, Theodore James Lanham, and wife, Natalie Lois, of Cedar, Michigan, and their son, David Craig Lanham, of Austin, Texas.
He is also survived by his wife, Jane Myers Lanham, son Lawrence Binkley Lanham of Quitman, Texas, daughter Carol Lanham Allen and her husband Michael D. Allen, of Tyler, Texas, 3 grand daughters Kathryn Lanham Evans and her husband Joe, Lindsay Allen Billingsley and husband George, Carly Allen-Martin and her husband Blake, all of Dallas and triplet great -grand daughters.
Phil will always be remembered for his love of life, sense of humor, and wonderful social skills.
Private family services will be held on February 1 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Memorials may be made to the or the charity of your choice.
