Philip Mednick, beloved father of Winifred Mednick Whelan, Bruce Mednick, and Greg Mednick, passed away June 11, 2014, at the age of 95. He was predeceased by his wife, Emilia Sebastian Mednick. A member of the Greatest Generation, our father lived through the Depression, worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp, and traveled from his native New York to Los Angeles while still a teen. He enlisted in the army the day after Pearl Harbor and fought courageously in World War II in the Pacific. He saw action in the Liberation of the Philippines where he met and married our mother. Returning to California with his war bride, he attended U.C.L.A. on the G.I. Bill. Beginning as a letter carrier, Philip retired as Assistant Postmaster of Chula Vista in 1971.

A lifelong and contributing member of the Masonic Order, Philip’s lodge was 626, Chula Vista, where he especially enjoyed degree work. He was an active member of Rotary during his career. Philip loved the great outdoors, above all Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks, where he camped with his family. He and our mother traveled to Europe, Australia and the Philippines. Especially in his later years, he enjoyed being surrounded by his family including his grandchildren, Cheryl, Matt, Rachel, Kathleen, and Ashlee. He also greatly appreciated the love and concern shown by his extended family, Lisa Mednick, Julie Johnson, Jim Whelan and Erin Wruck.

An avid reader with a keen intellect and an appetite for discussion, Philip Mednick was well regarded by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
