Philip Lee Young Jr. died peacefully on May 8, 2015 at the age of 82, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's.
In addition to a successful career as a chemical engineer with Union Carbide, Phil pursued many avocations: collecting antiques, clocks and watches, sailboat racing and tennis, computers, photography, gardening, bird watching, and travel. His abiding love of music and the opera brought great pleasure, and he served on the Board of the Williamsburg Symphonia for many years. His fondness for dogs and finally his cat Casey, are emblematic of the warmth and affection he shared with family and friends.
He is survived by Anne, his loving wife of 58 years; daughters, Nancy of Nantes, France, and Margaret Young-Sanchez and husband Fernando of Denver, Colorado; son Philip L. Young III and wife Jennifer of Stratford, Connecticut; and two granddaughters, Cecilia and Claudia Sanchez.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Williamsburg Symphonia, P.O. Phil taught me how to ride a bike! I was four years old and begging my parents for a bike. They would not buy me one with training wheels. They said I could not have one unless I could ride it without them. I remember Phil giving me the last push and I rode down the Youngs' tree-lined street in Ridgewood, NJ with exhilaration.
He also recorded in film every aspect of family life, including Margaret's hanging up of her bathing suit at the beach in the buff. When Phil showed the beach films, Margaret would stand in front of the projector to block out our view of her.
My condolences to the family.

Phil has been a great friend to Karen and me for 50 years! He was really a Renaissance Man! He had so many interests and talents. In addition, he had a sense of humor second to none. Anne, our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your wonderful and talented family. Please accept our heartfelt condolences in your great loss.

Anne, I am so sorry for your loss of Phil. We had many pleasant times with him at Respite. I especially enjoyed helping him with his memory book and seeing him remember wonderful trips and his many accomplishments.
