Piero Morselli Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2013.

MORSELLI, Piero, 71, passed away on June 4, 2013. Born in Florence, Italy, he was an art historian, published author, and later in life antiquarian. No matter where he went, he remained a true Florentine at heart.

After earning his PhD. from the University of Pittsburgh, he was an Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In Florence, Professor at Syracuse University, Bryn Mawr-University of Pennsylvania, and Fellow at Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies. He immigrated to Florida in 1967 where he attended Stetson and FSU. At FSU in 1974 he met his future wife Cynthia Acree. His son's birth was one of the reasons the couple decided to go back to Florence in 1981.

Survivors include wife, Cynthia, son, Lorenzo, brother-in-law, Wally Acree, mother-in-law, Peggy; and cousins in Italy. A memorial service will be held June 10, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Clement Catholic Church, Plant City. Donations may be made to Tampa General Hospital or South Florida Baptist Hospital.

Amici di Caravaggio

We met Piero sometime in 1971 and knew him for a few years while we were all attending Stetson and Florida State universities. He was the consummate ambassador of all things Italian but we knew him as an artist, teacher, and friend. He always entertained us with his liveliness and great sense of humor. He claimed to be a Count or something suggesting titled lineage; we never knew for sure and it never mattered because he acted the part and we were willing to believe it. We all eventually went our separate ways.

Then, in the early nineties, he popped up on our TV screens in a Bill Moyers special on Florence. It was called The Power of the Past and Piero could have never known how emblematic he himself was of that title for us. The wonderful sequence with the egg inspired us to send him an umbrella we painted to look like Brunelleschi's dome.

Online searches for Piero in recent years failed to produce anything of consequence until we stumbled upon this profoundly sad news not long after his passing.

We deeply regret letting Piero slip away but know the same will never happen to the memories we are fortunate to have of his quirky grins, uproarious laughter, and extraordinary presence,
which we hope will somehow live on somewhere in the cosmos.

Cynthia,
We just heard from Carol Betts about Piero and are shocked. He was so young--as that goes nowadays--and like you such a warm and dear person. We have always been sorry not to have been able to visit you again in Italy, and even though we haven't seen you in years,we feel his loss deeply.

Stay well, Reni and Marcel Franciscono

Oh, Cynthia, what sad news Brenda E. found on line. We missed you and Piero at the Extravaganzas last year and were afraid there had to be something bad happening to keep you away from the market. We are both heartbroken for you and your loss of your most charming, worldly and engaging husband. He and you remain in our hearts and prayers. Susan L. (The artist, chair warmer at Brenda's shop.)
