Maria del Pilar Gonzalez La'O Martin, was born on February 13, 1926, on the island of Luzon, Manilla, Philippine Islands, the youngest of seven children of Emilio Gonzalez La'O and Maria Luisa Garcia Hidalgo Gonzalez La'O
Pilar is predeceased by her parents; her siblings; Maria Luisa, Manuel, Margarita, Emilio, Jose, and her grandson, Christopher David.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard Allen Martin, married January 14, 1950. Their five children Mary Luise, Dorothy Anne, Catherine Beatrice, Richard James, Jacqueline Marie; and one adopted daughter Manuela Bonita; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and her sister Beatriz Barton.
She died peacefully in her home in Rossmoor , California, on September 12, 2016, surrounded by her loved ones.
Pilar's greatest passion was serving her Lord and Savior. She faithfully rose at 3:00 a.m. every day to begin praying for the family, friends, and her country. She believed that no mountain was too high, no pit too deep that the power of prayer could not reach. After she prayed, she would go to St. Hedwig Roman Catholic Church. She would open the doors of the church and assist in preparations for the mass that morning.
Pilar's hands were never idle, she ran an immaculate home that was tastefully decorated with many of the treasures she and her husband Richard collected on their travels. She and Richard saw and enjoyed the world together as constant traveling companions who loved to sightsee and experience new places. She spoke 3 languages, lived in 5 countries, and raised her children to love and appreciate varied cultures and foods as much as she did.
Not one to just sit back and watch life pass by, Pilar was a master horticulturist, whose garden was the pride of the neighborhood. She was an excellent bridge player, winning many tournaments as a member of the Old Ranch Country Club, and hosted many Bridge tournaments in her home. She was a true artist, crocheting bedspreads, tablecloths, napkins, toiletry covers, making pearl rosaries, necklaces, and more.
Pilar was full of compassion for those who are less fortunate. She would frequently visit local convalescent hospitals to pray for the patients and provide companionship. She felt a kinship to those who were immigrants to the States and less fortunate than she was. Often she would offer them odd jobs around her house. She made friends with anyone and everyone.
Above all, Pilar was passionate about her family. Her love for her husband was unwavering through their life together, and her enduring dedication to him inspired those who were fortunate enough to spend time in their company. She derived the utmost joy from spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Pilar will be deeply missed by all her family and friends, but we are not without hope and find comfort in the knowledge that we will one day be reunited with her in paradise in the presence of our Savior.

I have always had wonderful memories of my Aunt Pilar from childhood through marriage as she was the sweetest person ever who would do anything for you and was always smiling. However, my most endearing memory is the tremendous rock she was to me when my mother died and she took over the funeral arrangements held at her church and held a nice reception for family at her home. I Was so distraught at Mom's death and being only 27 and pregnant, had no idea what to do and my brother Jim was no better in this area. She and Uncle Dick were wonderful, as I was so lost, and I love them so much for their help. I will always hold a special place in my heart for my special Aunt Pilar with all my love.
