Purnell Schottland Ascough, 97, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at her home. She was born in Martinsville, Virginia on April 14, 1919 to Michael Robert Schottland and Lucy Purnell English Schottland.
Mrs. Ascough was a lifetime member of Broad Street Christian Church. She graduated from Fairfax Hall High School and attended Hollins College.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Woodson Ascough, daughter; Kathryn Ascough Smith, sisters; Helen S. Cheek, Margaret S. Hearn, Kathryn S. Beeler, Edith Schottland, Eleanor S. McPhillamy, and son-in-law, Harold Knowlton Work.
She is survived by her daughter; Julia A. Work of Dallas, TX, grandchildren; William F. Smith (Susan), Julia S. Klingman (Ross), and Robert Harrison Smith, great-grandchildren; Woodson Smith, Ann Mason Smith, Harrison and Maggie Klingman, and son-in-law; Nelson Frank Smith.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016, at 11:30 AM at Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville, VA.
The family would also like to thank the following caregivers for all their love and support: Marilyn Whittaker, Linda Moyer, Mae Penn, Elaine Preston, Gloria Tanks, and Norma Carter.
Memorials may be made to Piedmont Arts, 215 Starling Ave, Martinsville, VA 24112 and Edwards Adult Day Center, 431 East Commonwealth Blvd, Martinsville, VA 24112.
