Richard Bruce Mahoney, 71, of Manchester died January 25, 2013 at his residence following a long illness. A lifelong resident of Manchester, he was born here on May 28, 1941, the son of Daniel Mahoney and Mary Errol. He was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Central High School. He served as a military police officer in the Air Force. Following his service he returned to Manchester and was employed at the Highway Department and later as an officer with the Manchester Police Department. Richard Bruce Mahoney, 71, of Manchester died January 25, 2013 at his residence following a long illness. A lifelong resident of Manchester, he was born here on May 28, 1941, the son of Daniel Mahoney and Mary Errol.

He was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Central High School. He served as a military police officer in the Air Force. Following his service he returned to Manchester and was employed at the Highway Department and later as an officer with the Manchester Police Department.

He also worked in Security for the Veterans Administration and in various capacities at Granite State Meat Packing Company, Rifky Quick Lube and as a self employed painting contractor until he was disabled eight years ago.

Bruce was known as an excellent cook and enjoyed fishing and working on cars. He loved football and coached in the local youth leagues and enjoyed following the professional game. He was keenly aware of the needs of various charities and was always looking for ways to help. Family recalls that John Wayne was his idol.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa (Zielinski) Mahoney of Manchester; a daughter Kathleen George and her husband Christopher of Rochester, NH; a son Richard Mahoney Jr. of Detroit, MI; a stepdaughter, Heather Pelletier and her husband Thomas of Manchester; a stepson, Sean Mahoney and his fiancé Jocelyn Gilbert of Manchester; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Mahoney and William Mahoney, both of Manchester; a stepbrother, Paul Freeman of MA; several nieces. He was predeceased by his mother Mary Freeman and a brother Timothy Mahoney.

Calling hours were held Sunday from 2 to 4 PM in the McHugh Funeral Home, 283 Hanover St., corner of Beech St. Following cremation urn interment will be in the NH Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the NH Food Bank, 700 East Industrial Park Dr., Manchester NH 03109.
