MSGT R. D. "Dee" Dickey, U.S. Air Force, Retired, age 84, died Monday, May 12 in his residence.
Mr. Dickey was born in Effingham County, where he was raised on the family farm, along with his eight siblings. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He later enrolled in the U.S. Air Force and National Guard Reserves, where he served for over 30 years, retiring as a supervisor of the bombing range at Fort Stewart. In addition, he worked as a Construction Equipment Superintendent for Eason Construction Company.
He was a charter member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church, founded in 1965 where he was named Deacon Emeritus in 2006 and Man of the Year. He was master of the deep fryer at church socials and was well known for his fish fries with hush puppies and deep fried chicken and turkey.
Dee enjoyed hunting and fishing; he was a member of the Oliver Hunting Club and was perhaps best known as an avid vegetable gardener. One of his greatest joys was to share the bounty of his many gardens with friends and strangers, alike. His family will remember him as a kind and generous person who loved God, his family, and his church. He will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. He recently told his family "I feel honored that God allowed me to live this long."
Dee is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Dickey, of Statesboro; son, Chris Dickey and his wife Patty of Statesboro; daughters, Robyn Dickey of Alabama and Diane Shertz of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Lacey Rehm, Zachary Shertz, Ashli Barnes, Lori Dickey, and Raine Barnes; sisters, Louise Uhrich and Alma Ree Melton; sister-in-law, Floy Dickey and extended family Judy and Tom Barnes.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday, May 14, in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, May 15 at Eastern Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Harry Sherrer officiating. Burial will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
