Obituary

It's not often that one man is able to live two full lives in two very different countries, but Rolando Moreno was blessed with this honor. Mr. Moreno died holding the hand of his grandson Tony Moreno Jr. Tuesday morning at the age of 95. Mr. Moreno was born in Cuba and left his beloved country in 1961. He was a prominent banker and journalist in the city of Matanzas. Already in his early 40s, when the revolution took place, he felt the need to send his young son (the late Tony Moreno Sr.) on one of the Peter Pan flights to Florida. Within a year he and his late wife Eva fled Cuba and joined their son in Miami. The job market at the time was brighter in Orlando, and he retired from Orange County Public Schools nearly 30 years ago. What his daughter-in-law Miriam Moreno says, "is despite all the hardships he faced, he was the most positive person I ever met". A deeply religious man, Miriam Moreno says he was a true prayer warrior, who would spend several hours each week, praying for those in need. While Moreno never mastered English, that never stopped him from making himself available to help anyone who asked. "He loved people and would do anything for anyone who wanted his help, he was always giving, and deeply loved by his family", according to his granddaughter Lisa Haramboure. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Miriam Moreno, grandchildren Lisa Moreno Haramboure (Fred), Tony Moreno Jr. (Karen) and five great grandchildren Freddy Haramboure, Angie Haramboure, Carli Moreno, Tony Moreno III, and Ellie Moreno. Funeral mass will take place on Thursday (today) at ten am. at St. John Vianney Church on Orange Blossom Trail. In lieu of flowers kindly make memorial donations to the Moreno Fund at the Leukemia Lymphoma Society 3319 Maguire Blvd. #101 Orlando, FL 32803.
