Rachel Olive Whitener Jordan, 93, of Charlotte went home to be with Her Lord and Savior on Tuesday evening, July 22. She passed away peacefully at the Asbury Care Center, Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community in Charlotte. Rachel was born in Catawba County, near Hickory, NC, to the late Herbert Ausburn and Edna Olive Deitz Whitener. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Paul Alexander Jordan, grand-daughter Conel Jordan, and great grandson Emery Jordan. Rachel was a loving wife and caring mother and is survived by her two children, Tina Rachelle Boals (James) of Cedar Grove, TN, and Timothy A. Jordan (Judy) of Huntsville, AL; and, grand-children Randy Evans of Charlotte, Lance Evans (Noreen) of Monroe, James Boals, Jr., of Cedar Grove, TN, Paul William Boals (Lisa) of Denver, CO, and Charles Paul Jordan (Julie) of Glen Ridge, NJ. There are ten great grand-children with numerous nieces and nephews.
Rachel graduated from Claremont Central High School in 1938 (name later changed to Hickory High School) and also from Shuford Beauty School in Charlotte. She worked in sales at Harris Hart Clothing Company in Dilworth from 1955 until 1966 when she began working at the Wesley Nursing Center at The Methodist Home as a Unit Secretary and Scheduling Coordinator, until she retired on December 10, 1982. She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, the Hickory Grove Golden Years Club, and the Red Hat Society. Additionally, she served several elected positions, i.e., President of the American Legion Post 400 Auxiliary, Secretary of the Hickory Grove School PTA, and the Church Council of St. Thomas Lutheran Church.
Paul and Rachel resided in the Hickory Grove community for 50 years, where they always had a very large vegetable garden. She loved flowers and they frequently sold fresh vegetables, fruit, and honey from their back porch. They were Charter Members of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Charlotte. When they moved to The Methodist Home in 1994 (name changed to Aldersgate five years later), it wasn't long until she was exercising her "green thumb" with new buds and blooms soon appearing around the campus. She had a knack for drying flowers and making dried flower arrangements that she would sell at craft shows. Many of the Aldersgate residents often referred to Rachel as the "Flower Lady." She was also a perfectionist about many things; however, conservation, the environment, and recycling were always a high priority for her, long before they became popular topics of discussion.
Visitation with the family will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service that will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC, with Pastor Mike Goode and Aldersgate Chaplain, Mrs. Karen Moore officiating. Intermittent will be at Charlotte Memorial Gardens (7632 Hood Road, off Robinson Church Road) following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials may be made to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church for a Memorial Block; or, to your favorite charity in Rachel's memory
