Emily

It seems I miss my father more with each passing day. He was a remarkable man who lived so simply, quietly, leaving a mark on me that is revealing itself more as time passes. I told him I would miss him but I could not express and did not know how much.

I want to send my love and heartfelt sympathy to my cousins Emily, Mary, and Ginny for their recent loss. I remember Uncle Raeford from my childhood as soft-spoken, gentle, and kind. As an adult I became even more aware of his wonderful qualities as a family man through my mother's stories as well as through direct personal experience. Not so long ago he called me after both my parents had passed away just to find out how I was doing. I will always be grateful for that sweet gesture. I also want his two grandsons to know how much he meant to so many far flung relatives who nevertheless remember him with great fondness.

It is probably too early for me to speak on this, but my father was an incredible man. I think everyone who knew him, especially in his last years when he put aside worries about his own health issues to tend my mother, would agree. He truly honored and cherished her. The wedding vows are often not tested right away, but later in the marriage. What he did, he didn't want credit for. He said he did it because he loved her. He wanted her to be happy and comfortable, if it was the last thing he did. His intelligence and honor were hallmarks of who he was. He never lost either. I am proud to call you Daddy. Love, Mary, your middle girl
