Mr. Allred was born in Clayton, Georgia Nov. 16, 1928, the son of Shelby S. and Annie Ruth (Rowe) Allred. His parents, three older brothers and one sister predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jackie Arnold Allred, a daughter, Dr. Karen A. Allred and son-in law, Dr. Jack D. Griffith of Chapel Hill. Also, two nephews and a niece, Stephen M. Allred, Richard M. Allred, and Peggy A. Williams, whose parents were deceased and who lived in Greensboro with Ralph, Jackie, and Karen.

Mr. Allred graduated from Georgia Tech in Electrical Engineering in 1952, and served for 2 years in the Korean Conflict. He left the service as a 1st Lt. in the Signal Corps and served in the U. S. Army Active Reserves, being discharged at the rank of Captain.

Ralph met his wife Jackie in Decatur, Georgia, after his return from Korea. They were married in the Decatur First Baptist Church, where both of their families were members. They then moved to Greensboro, N.C. His entire civilian work was with the Bell System, working on military electronics. He retired from the Bell System in 1990.

Mr. Allred was active for many years at Lawndale Baptist Church, helping to develop a Long Range Plan, serving as Sunday School Director, and was active as a deacon and Chairman of the deacons.

He and his wife thoroughly enjoyed ballroom dancing as a hobby. Also, Ralph enjoyed flying his Piper Cub since the age of 35 for many years.
