Raymond Richard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2016.

Raymond H. Richard, 75, of Hyannis passed away suddenly on November 28, 2016 at his home. Ray was born on September 18, 1941 at Cape Cod Hospital to Marie Elise and Joseph Gerard Richard.

Ray was a lifelong resident of the Barnstable villages. He graduated in 1959 with a four year certificate in Boatbuilding from the Barnstable Trade School. He went on to work at Crosby Boat Yard for many years. After that, he partnered with his brother Paul and created Richard Brothers Building Contractors and built custom homes in the Centerville/Osterville area. In his retirement years, he restored and rebuilt Beetle cats. Like his father and his brothers, he was an amazingly talented craftsman.

Ray loved cars and fighter planes, but he attained the most joy from sailing, clamming and the ocean. In his younger years, Ray was a member of the Cape Cod Ski Club. He was an active member of the Hyannis Yacht Club for a number of years. Ray made his mark on the beetle cat race scene. He could often be found on the patio in later years, with the other coffee club men of HYC. His annual Melody Tent visit, to listen to guitar music, brought him great joy.

A friend of Bill W's, Ray achieved 33 years of sobriety and served his community well by establishing many life time friends and helping many others who struggled with addiction issues. He was well loved for his humor and quite famous for his hats, pranks and jokes.

Ray is survived by his loving children, daughter Susan Robbins and husband Alton; daughter Catherine Richard and wife Martha Campbell; and son Steven Richard, all of whom reside in Sandwich. Ray is also survived by his brother Paul and wife Nancy as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Gerald A. and Joseph James, and sister Edna Fournier. Ray also leaves his dearest friends and tireless companions, Kathi Dwyer and Theresa Packard.

Ray was a great neighbor! He was funny and he always had a joke. He was kind and compassionate man always trying to help someone. And he was an early riser ! I will always remember him zooming down the street in his roadrunner car . My grandchildren will miss Papa Ray . Godspeed Ray

To the Ray Richard family; Ray was a great guy and a superb craftsman. My childhood memories go all the way back to the late 1940's and early 1950's when his dad was the finish carpenter, craftsman ,and cabinet maker for my grandfather's firm, John B. Lebel and sons. Ray followed in his Dad's footsteps , with his same superb skills , into the woodworking trades. He was also skilled at helping people through rough patches in their lives. He will be truly missed by all of us that knew him.
