Raymond Carl Wheeler, a resident of Fallbrook Woods Assisted Living in Portland, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Prior to moving to Portland, Mr. Wheeler resided in Wellesley, Massachusetts for 52 years.
Ray, as he was known to family and friends, was born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts on November 14, 1919, to Carl F. Wheeler and Eva Plumb Wheeler. He graduated from Greenfield (MA) High School, Becker College, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He continued his education at Clark University and Boston University.
Ray worked as Assistant Manager of Wheeler's General Store in West Brookfield, prior to entering the U.S. Army. He was Honorably Discharged in 1943. After continuing his education, he worked as a Researcher for Babson's Reports. In 1956, he became self-employed as a Registered Investment Advisor, a profession he continued until his retirement in 2002.
Ray was a Life Member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and American Youth Hostels. His two favorite pastimes were camping and singing. For many years he owned a Volkswagen Van, camper-conversion, in which he traveled through 49 states, including a six-month tour of Alaska in 1986. Prior to moving to Maine, he performed as the singer with a band based in Newton, Massachusetts. Even as Alzheimer's robbed him of his short-term memory, he could recall all the lyrics of some old standards and sing them with perfect pitch to entertain family and friends.
Mr. Wheeler was predeceased by his brother, Alan L. Wheeler, of West Brookfield, Massachusetts. He is survived by his nieces June Wheeler Camp of Scarborough, Maine and Barbara Bachmann of Anapolis, Brazil; his nephew Philip Wheeler of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Uncle Ray was very fond and appreciative of his grandniece, Nan M Boucher of Portland, who served as his health-care advocate for many years.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Sawdawga Cemetery in Whitingham, Vermont.
