Regina Goodwin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 21, 2013.

Regina "Reggie" Williams Goodwin, 104, of Jackson, departed this world peacefully at home on Sunday, January 20th. She brightened every life she touched in those years and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She sincerely loved people and was happiest when baking something to lift someone's spirits. Angel food cakes, cheese krispies, and homemade pimento cheese were some of her specialties, and she never visited a doctor without taking them a homemade treat.
Sunday dinners at Reggie's table were special times for family as she cooked for 20 or more well into her 90s. Reggie made each person's favorite menu on the Sunday nearest their birthday. Her most sought after recipes were compiled into a cookbook called "Sunday Dinner" and given to family and friends at her 100th birthday party as a token of appreciation and a reminder of the importance of Christian family ties.
Reggie was born November 20, 1908 in Houston, MS . She earned a BA in Latin from MSCW in 1928. She was married to J. Powell Goodwin July 20, 1929 and they made their home in Philadelphia MS. While there, she was an active member of the Presbyterian Church where she played the organ and taught Sunday School for many years. She also taught high school English and Latin .The couple moved to Raymond in 1960. She always had a great love f or reading and at the age of 55, she commuted to LSU, where she received her MA in Library Science in 1963. She was the librarian at Hinds Community College in Raymond for many years. Upon retirement the couple moved to Jackson.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, J. Powell Goodwin, her parents Dr. Joshua Rice Williams and Nona Hobson Williams of Houston, MS, infant son William Powell Goodwin, and brother Felix T. Williams .
Reggie is survived by her son Joe Rice Goodwin (Maxine) and her daughter, Nona Goodwin Ware. Grandchildren are David Goodwin (Jordan), Kathy Cousineau (Mark), Ginger Gage (William), Eddie Ware, Brian Ware (Allison) , and Sheila Thornton (Tommy).
Great Grandchildren are Steven Rozina, Josh Rozina, Parks Goodwin, Reed Williams, Travis Gage, Spencer Gage, Logan Gage, Pierce Goodwin, Will Gage, Jarod Thornton, Michelle Cousineau, Cooper Ware, and Sarah Payton Ware. Trace Rozina is her great great grandson.
Pall bearers are David Goodwin, Eddie Ware, Brian Ware, Tommy Thornton, and Parks Goodwin. The family wishes to express special thanks to her caregivers, primarily her long term sitter and companion, Diane Bennett.
A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church , 5301 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS 39211. Online guestbook www.wrightferguson.com

Joe Rice I am saddened to read about your Mother. At 104 what a wonderful life she must have had. No matter the age though I know it is difficult to let her go. My Dad was 94 and I still think about him almost daily. God bless you and your family during this time.
