This is difficult for me to write. Tiny was a dear friend and a warm presence in my life from the time I first met her in 1970. That was not long after I started working with her mother, who I called Grandma Lela. Tiny never did learn the language, except some words -- at that time and in her generation few did -- but she did learn the stories, and she had the gift as a story teller. We worked together in the Eastern Shasta County Indian Community Center when it started in 1973 under Paul Hinze's direction. After Paul died, I was called away elsewhere, in the way that the Spirit moves us all through this life, but Tiny and I always stayed in touch. I called her sometimes around the time of her birthday in September. A few times I got to visit over the years.

Then one day she decided to drive across the country by herself and see other places. She came to visit me and my family in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Our youngest daughter, Katrina, came downstairs looking for someone named "Tiny" and was some surprised that the person sitting in our kitchen was so very much bigger than she. But she got over that, and the two girls loved the stories about the little Ajjat that Tiny told them.

Tiny's mother was named Yámáálit'wííta, "Everbloom", because her grandfather had a vision of her surrounded by many flowers ('ámál) -- signifying her children, especially the girls. Tiny was a splendid blossom on her family tree, and an adornment to her people. Her gentle influence, like a spiritual fragrance, lingers in the hearts and conduct of all of us who were touched by her.

When my family moved to Burney in 1946 we moved next door to Reitha and her husband. My dad was Gene Snyder. I played with Oney Rhodes and knew the Rhodes family too because they were up the road from us. I also knew Lela Rhodes who on the other side of us. In fact I was just talking about Reitha with my wife the other day. It has been a long time since I have seen any of these people but I want to send condolences to all the family that is still living from my wife and I. May The Good Lord give you peace and comfort at this time.

I want to express to the family our sadness and the loss of a great woman. Reitha was a great teacher that gave 110% in all that she did. She was a Teacher that shared about many things, Our Native Culture, why we should always Honor and Respect each other and understand who we are as Indian People and she was great with our Young Indian Children. I loved when Reitha would talk to the kids and share her stories they would always be so amazed with her stories. I loved it when at the youth camps that how the little kids would be around her. I enjoyed her way of teaching, soft but true, caring and sharing the understanding of who we are and where we come from. This great Teacher and Respected person, a Mother, an Aunt, a Sister, a Mentor to many, her presence will never leave us. I know that she is with the Creator and she will always be in our Hearts. I am also Very Honored to have had the opportunity to know this great and wonderful Lady and Teacher.
