Papa Rene

A father, a grandfather, a husband, a brother, an uncle, an in-law, a nephew, a friend/buddy/pare/kuya, and a police officer. He exceeded in every single one of those roles. That's why Renato Santana Gutierrez Sr. was such an exceptional individual.

On October 13, 1955 Dominga and Nestor Gutierrez welcomed the newest addition to their family and named him Renato. He was the second of seven children in the Gutierrez family. He was nicknamed Lilet (bulilit) because he was such a petite little boy. He grew up in a fun-filled family with six siblings: Reynaldo, Carmen, Bituin, Nestor Jr., Napoleon, and Revelina.

He grew to be a fine young man and from Lilet, he became Rene. He met and fell in love with Adoracion (Dory) and they married on October 30, 1975. Together, they built their own family and had four children: Evangeline, Jacqueline, Beverly, and Renato Jr. (Rene Boy). He was a wonderful Papa to all his kids. He gave lots of love, discipline, and life lessons. He was the core and strength of the family during both the good and bad times, especially with the early passing of his first grandchild, Ghiela.

Rene's primary profession was serving as a officer in the Philippines National Police. He devotedly served his country in this role for more than 20 years. After Rene retired, he decided to reside in California to be with his family. During his years in the US, he had the chance to spend more quality time with his grandchildren Evan, Ariel, and newborn Isaac. He was also very dear to his daughter-in-law, Candace, and sons-in-law, Benjamin, and Engin. Rene was the type of person that was always willing to lend an ear, give advice, and offer a shoulder to lean on. He was a person with many interests such as cars, fishing, guns, and do-it-yourself projects.

Preceded in death by both parents (Nestor and Dominga) and his brother Reynaldo (husband of Imelda), Rene is survived by his wife Adoracion, children: Evangeline (Benjamin), Jacqueline, Beverly (Engin) and Renato Jr. (Candace), grandchildren: Evan, Ariel, and Isaac, siblings: Carmen, Bituin, Nestor Jr., Napoleon (Imelda), and Revelina and a host of nieces and nephews, to whom he was like a second father, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and good friends. His memory will be cherished and he will be missed by many. When people say Renato Santana Gutierrez Sr., the words well-loved and well-respected come to mind. He will be missed dearly.

"To my wonderful Kuya Rene - I will gravely miss you. We still have places to go and things to do, but your sudden departure terribly saddened me. You were one of those good people I had great memories with. I want to say that I am happy with..." -Dennis Sebastian
