Reuben "Paul" Carter passed away on June 16, 2017.
Paul was born on August 21, 1976 in Little Rock, Arkansas to his parents Reuben and Cindy. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1995. He married his soul mate and love of his life Jennifer Lynn McMickle on August 9, 1997 in Sheridan, Arkansas. They first lived in Conway, Arkansas, then moved to Austin, Texas in 1999. They were currently residing in Georgetown, Texas and both employed at the Texas Legislative Council.
Paul was an avid musician, singer, songwriter. He started his music career at a very young age. He began by playing guitar with over-the-phone lessons and advice from his Uncle Gene, giving him directions on how to play his guitar chords. He caught on quickly and started writing his own music by 8 years of age. Paul and his friends Jeremy Estell and Kyle Thornton won a singing talent show contest in high school performing Pearl Jam's "Black." In 1996, Paul, Jamey Black, and Jeremy Estell played at Vino's which is where Tom Murry introduced Paul & Jennifer. His band Selfish Child with Jamey Black and Carl Crosby was formed in 1996 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Selfish Child played venues in all the major cities around Arkansas and released one album named "Inhuman." In 2000, Paul started the band Laughing Atom in Austin, Texas with John Hardin and Joe Mier. Laughing Atom gigged extensively in the Austin area, and produced one EP, "Laughing Atom." Most recently, Paul was writing new songs and recording them for a solo album of brand new material.
Paul started working at the Texas Legislative Council in January of 1999, he worked his way up quickly from Operations through the Workstation Group and then, through diligent self-driven determination became Project Leader of the Security Support Group. Due to Paul's security infrastructure design, maintenance, and quick adaptation to new threats, the offices of the Texas House, Senate, and the Legislative Council itself had a record-breaking lack of incidents in the 2017 Legislative Session.
Paul is survived by his wife, Jennifer Lynn Carter, of Georgetown, Texas. His mother Cindy Smith of Harrison, Arkansas, his maternal grandmother Betty K Steelman-Clements of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His Uncle and Aunt Gene & Kimberly Williams, and 2 cousins Taylor & Steelman Williams of Austin, Texas. Paul considered Jennifer's family his family as well, Her mother Virginia McMickle, and 2 brothers Keith & Jason McMickle, all of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Paul is preceded in death by his Father, who held a huge place in Paul's heart, Reuben Chester Carter. Also preceded by Paul's passing are his paternal grandparents Earl & Delores Carter, and his maternal grandfather, Buck Steelman, all of Arkansas.
Please dress casually for the memorial service at Cook Walden Davis Funeral Home located at 2900 Williams Drive in Georgetown, Texas 78628 on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 3:30. Shari and I are so sorry about Paul.
I remember when he came to Austin and always enjoyed visiting him at the gatherings you hosted. I'll miss hearing his perspective on technology and events, as well as what he was up to. Shari and I both thought a lot of him and are very sorry to hear about his passing.
