Ricardo Palacios Jr. (Tocallo) 95 years old passed away September 04, 2017 in Austin, Texas surrounded by family members. Ricardo (Tocallo) was born January 21, 1922 in El Paso, Texas to Ricardo and Luz Palacios. He was preceeded in death by his parents, wife Julia H. Palacios and two brothers and two sisters.
In 1939 while still attending Bowie High School, Tocallo, enlisted in the Texas National Guard, 36th Infantry Division, Company E located in El Paso to earn some money. The men of Company E, were a group of young (totally) Hispanic patriots from throughout Texas that became a combat cohesive unit achieving many battle awards. Tocallo entered the war in North Africa and in September 1943 made the beach landing at Salerno, Italy. The company had many hard fought battles moving up the Italian boot. On his 21th birthday, January 1943 after crossing the infamous Rapido River attack he and three other survivors were taken prisoners of war. He remained a POW for the Germans and Russians. He escaped from the Russians and met the approaching US Army.
Tocallo was a barber for years and retired from the FT. Bliss Commissary. Ricardo and Julia were married May 23, 1948 at San Xavier Catholic Church, El Paso, Texas and they were able to celebrate 51 years of marriage. He is survived by sons Ricardo (Rachel – care giver) Daniel (Carolina) George (Sylvia), daughter Cecilia Amaya; 13 amazing grandchildren, 13 adorable great-children and one smiling great-great grandchild. He is also survived by a whole troop of nieces and nephews; sisters Agustina Castaneda, Solidad Castro, Carmen Prieto, Gregoria Rivera, and brother Nicolas Palacios.
Pall bearers: Dominic Palacios, Nick Germain, Adrian Palacios, David Palacios, Gabriel Palacios, David Jeremiah Palacios, Frank Nunez, Robert Martinez.
Visitation will be from 5-9pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina, 1060 N. Carolina Dr., on Thursday, September 14th with a Vigil at 7pm. Funeral Mass will take place, Friday, September 15th at 9:15am at Guardian Angel Catholic Church followed by the internment at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Services under the direction of Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina 915-598-3332.

Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country while serving with the 36th "Texas" Infantry Division fighting the Germans during World War II in North Africa and Italy especially at Salerno in September of 1943 and the Rapido River in January of 1944 and as a POW-God knows what you had to endure. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
