Richard Holtz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2017.

Dr. Richard A. Holtz, 77 years old, passed away on August 12, 2017 in Clearwater, Florida. Richard was an accomplished and well respected Board Certified Vascular and Thoracic Surgeon who touched countless lives through his practice in Largo, Florida.

Richard was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He was the son of Albert Holtz, an accomplished Chemist, and Lillian Selkowitz, a Physical Therapist. While growing up, he was active in his school's extracurricular activities and volunteered as a fireman. He met his wonderful wife of 45 years, Judy Kaleda, in a New Jersey hospital while attending medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathy. Throughout his medical training and career, he belonged to several medical organizations and associations. As a family man, he earned his pilot’s license, enjoyed photography, was a certified scuba diver, and enjoyed traveling with his family. After retirement and with the passing of his wife in 2010, he began volunteering at Morton Plant Hospital with the Day Surgery Department.

Richard was an adored father, a treasured grandfather, and a loyal friend who deeply loved his family and friends and was beloved by many. He will truly be missed but will live on in the hearts of the many that love and remember him. Richard is survived by his three children: Kimberly Uhle, Karen Jimenez, Tim Holtz, and their spouses and children, and his brother Dr. Jerry Holtz and his family.

A memorial service will be held on August 27, 2017 at 2:00 at the Serenity Funeral Home in Largo, FL. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honor Richard's life with memorial contributions made to the American Heart Association or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

We double dated at our Senior Prom at Highland Park High School where we were friends. We both, became doctors. We are both named Richard. I lost track of him after high school, only seeing him once thereafter, but I know what kind of a doctor he became. His photograph is the same visage that I remember from his teenage years. Cruising the internet, I was so sorry to read his obituary. So sorry. My condolences to his family.

Richard was a dear friend. I first met Dr. Holtz when I was applying for an internship at Sun Coast Hospital, in 1977. He was always a kind and generous mentor during my training and later we became colleagues and friends, sharing many patients. I retired and moved away but we kept in touch.
He was a skilled surgeon, a true physician who always put his patients first. He was a loving husband and father, and a loyal friend. I will miss him.
I offer my condolences to his beautiful family, and I hope it helps to remember what a good man he was and what a full and fruitful life he lived.

To the family of Dr. Holtz,
Your beloved father, grandfather &brother was one of a kind, humble and smart. In September, 1986, he gave our medical service business its first surgical case at Metropolitian General Hospital. He only cared about the best for his patients! Over the years, we have seen him at Morton Plant & Sun Coast Hospital functions, he always remembered us. The last time we spoke was April of this year, we thanked him for believing in us over 30 yrs. ago. God speed Dr. Holtz , reap God's rewards for a life well lived! We will miss you,
Cappy & Kathy Dallacosta "Cell Saver" Team
