Richard Zschoche Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2017.

Richard Edwin Zschoche, known to his friends as Dick, was born July 22, 1933 in Ida Grove, Iowa to parents Edwin and Alice Zschoche. The family moved to Sioux City shortly after. That is where Dick met the love of his life, Shirley Taylor, where they were neighbors and attended high school together. They were married on February 22, 1952 and started a family right away. In 1955 they moved to Portland, Oregon where they purchased 5 acres with a small home in the community of Bonny Slope. Dick and Shirley eventually built a larger home on the property where together they raised their children, Ronald, Donald, Kathleen, Rick, and Robert. Dick was able to stay in the family home until his passing, which was one of his most important wishes. He often said that building a home and raising his family was what he was most proud of, a family that grew with marriages, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several family pets.

Dick lived a full and rich life. He was a talented and accomplished athlete, enjoyed building and remodeling, and was actively involved in the community and his church. He worked at Tektronix for over forty years holding a variety of positions but ultimately settled into the role of machinist which was what he enjoyed the most. He loved to work with his hands. After retirement, he spent a great deal of time helping his family with remodeling projects of their own. He also found the time to take up new interests including scuba diving and hiking. He knew the Columbia Gorge like the back of his hand.

The last years of his life were spent caring for Shirley as her health declined. He was devoted to her and it was clear he lost a great part of himself when she passed away in 2015. They were married for 63 years and their love for each other was a beautiful example for all to see. Dick knew how important friends and family were. He made friends for life and was loved by so many people who had the good fortune to know him. He made the world a better place and will be missed.
