Obituary

Richard Tarkington Abernathy, 73, a life-long Richmond resident, passed away on January 29. Dick was the son of the late Richard and Neta Abernathy. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church who valued his experience in Emmaus and his continuing fellowship with a Trinity covenant group. He developed the industrial hygiene department at Dominion Power and served as its first director. He served as president of the Richmond MS Society. Richard Tarkington Abernathy, 73, a life-long Richmond resident, passed away on January 29. Dick was the son of the late Richard and Neta Abernathy. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church who valued his experience in Emmaus and his continuing fellowship with a Trinity covenant group. He developed the industrial hygiene department at Dominion Power and served as its first director. He served as president of the Richmond MS Society.

Dick is survived by his children, Jeff Abernathy of Alma, Michigan, Stephanie Allison and her husband, John, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, and Laura Wade Shirley and her husband, Doug, of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren, Rohan and Maren Abernathy-Wee, DJ Allison and his wife, Julie, Jenny Allison, and Noah, Luke and Eli Shirley. He is also survived by his siblings, Ronald Abernathy, Cheryl Shelton and Doug Abernathy. He graduated from Hermitage High School in 1958, and Randolph-Macon College in 1963.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 2, at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue. Contributions may be made either to Trinity or to the Richard T. Abernathy Scholarship at Randolph-Macon College, P.O. Box 5005, Ashland, Virginia 23005.
